Practicing every day is the fastest way to get better at drawing and develop your style. While we won’t be drawing every day, the techniques and skills from this class can be used every day to grow. In this class we will be looking at reference photos (clear pictures of people) and sketching the people in them. I will be utilizing a website with stock reference photos and a timer. The reason we use a timer is to help the artists stop focusing on details and try to capture the subject’s action, purpose, and silhouette. Oftentimes, artists will become too detail oriented and it can stunt their growth and progress. This class will help facilitate fast growth with artists. 

[Please note: the times listed below are subject to change depending on the needs of that particular class on that particular day. Regardless, students will still get ample time to draw during the class]

The first 10 - 15 minutes of class will be a warm-up and quick artist tip. We will only have 30 seconds to sketch each subject. It sounds crazy, I know, but this is to help students loosen up and get in the right headspace for the rest of class. The results from the first 10 minutes of class will look very messy, but the goal is just to translate the most important aspects of the photo to the paper.

The next 30-ish minutes of class will be dedicated to slightly more detailed figure drawing (drawing poses). But only slightly. We will switch to a 2 minute timer and cycle through about 15 poses.

After the 30 second and 2 minute drawing exercises we will discuss and work on areas that students feel like they are struggling with or need more help on. We will discuss these weak areas and I will give tips on how to overcome them. During this time we will also be able to revisit any reference photos that students want to practice with more detail or or have questions about. We will also be able to try more challenging poses if time permits.  

During the entire class students will be able to watch me draw. I will be drawing digitally, but students are welcome to use digital or traditional (pen/pencil and paper) media. I will show them my own process and can talk them through some of the more challenging poses. I have been an artist for over 15 years and have 3 published webtoons (digital comics). My style of drawing is distinctly anime, but even stylized drawings benefit from being rooted in real-life models. 

Every artist needs to practice to be able to develop their own style and confidence. I am excited to be able to help these students down this sometimes treacherous road.
