 Week 1
Lesson 1
Batesian Mimicry Part 1
Did you know that there is spider who builds a larger, fake spider out of dead insects and debris to look bigger than it actually is? How about the fact that there is a butterfly chrysalis that looks like the head of a deadly snake? Many fascinating creatures use Batesian Mimicry to pretend to be something dangerous to avoid predators!
Lesson 2
Batesian Mimicry Part 2
Did you know that there is a little primate who pretends to be a cobra! Woah! I also found a spider to pretends to be a ladybug! This is because ladybugs are poisonous, and a lot of predators who like spiders do not like ladybugs! Interesting! This class will wrap up the Batesian Mimicry section.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Aggressive Mimicry Part 1
Some animals trick other animals into coming close so they can eat them, like the anglerfish, for example! It uses its lure to catch fish! It's a fish that fishes! Weird! There is also a wild cat in the Amazon who will pretend to be a baby monkey so that the others come looking for it, and then....dinner is served! Yum! Aggressive mimicry is when animals lure prey to their death using their bodies, sounds, scent, and more!
Lesson 4
Aggressive Mimicry Part 2
Did you know that there is a snake who goes fishing for birds? It's true! They use the spider-like end of their tail to trick birds into coming near so they can gobble them up! Sneaky! This class will wrap up the Aggressive Mimicry section.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Mullerian Mimicry
Did you know that the reason poison dart frogs are all colorful is to send the same message to any predator who may think about eating them? The same goes for wasps, butterflies, and many other creatures! The predator will learn its lesson from one, and avoid anything that looks similar after! Mullerian Mimicry is when animals look similar to each other in order to keep a common predator away!
Lesson 6
Self-Mimicry
A frog with eyes on its butt? Yes, it looks as weird as it sounds! Many animals pretend of have eyes on other parts of their bodies, like the owl butterfly! Others pretend to have a head on both ends, like certain kinds of snakes! Self-mimicry is when one part of an animals body looks like another part, which redirects the predator away from the head or vital organs, and gives the creature a chance to escape!
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Mimesis Mimicry have probably heard about leaf insects and stick bugs before! T
You have probably heard about leaf insects and stick bugs before! These are just a couple examples of animals who use Mimesis Mimicry to look like things in their environment in order to hide in plain sight! Come learn about a ton of others as we explore some of natures weirdest creations!
Lesson 8
Double Identities
Now that we all know the different types of animal mimicry, let's take a look at some new creatures who fit not just one, but two of the categories of mimicry that we have just learned about! Some animals practice different types of mimicry during different stages in their lives! Can you sort it out? Let's give it a try!
  • By the end of this class, your learner will be able to understand they ways in which animals, near and far, big and small, survive using the various types of mimicry available to them, perfected over time!
I have taught animal science for nearly 20 years, and have enjoyed every moment! There is nothing like sharing my passion for animals with like-minded students! We learn best when we are passionate about the subject!

We will briefly touch on reproduction in a very PG way, and convergent evolution, where animals who are not related have the same defense, like spines, for example.
