In this virtual version of my popular "Macbeth" course, you will engage with William Shakespeare himself and learn about his play in a fun, spooky, and interactive way!
Unlike my previous "Macbeth" course, all teacher interactions will be done through the use of pre-recorded video.
Through a combination of multimedia lectures, online games, and a digital escape room, students will delve into the plot, characters, and themes of "Macbeth." The class is designed to be interactive, fun, smart, and spooky.
The class is organized into five parts:

Part I: The Plot of "Macbeth"
You will play a video where William Shakespeare (played by me), will introduce the plot, characters, and literary terms in the play, "Macbeth," The video will feature graphics, video, and recordings that will explain the plot and who the characters are, and their significance to the plot. Shakespeare will also take time to define a series of vocabulary terms like "soliloquy" and "tragic flaw," terms that explain his unique writing style and how he constructed his tragedies.
After the video, students will participate in a group quiz via Nearpod. The quiz will cover the vocabulary words the students just learned, as well as the characters. and see their scores that will show how well they applied their knowledge from Part I.

Part II: Jacobean England
Students will learn via Nearpod and Youtube about the English King James I, the monarch for whom Shakespeare wrote "Macbeth." First, the students will read 1-3 slides with some historical details about the king. Then the students will watch a funny parody song about the life of the Stuart monarchs and answer questions about King James' life. The section will conclude with slides and a virtual tour of Parliament about the infamous Gunpowder Plot, where an assassin tried to blow up the English government!

Part III: The Curse Of Macbeth- Using Nearpod, students will delve into the tragic history of the persecution of witches, which Shakespeare incorporated into "Macbeth." The students will then read an article about the characters of the witches and answer open-ended questions on Nearpod. Next, the students will read an article about the alleged 'Curse of Macbeth,' and learn about the long-standing theater superstition. The class will conclude with an online game via Scratch, where you play as Macbeth and deliver the famous Dagger Speech before going to kill the king.

Part IV: Acting Shakespeare- Your instructor has played Macbeth professionally and has written articles about the experience. Using Nearpod slides, online articles, and a Youtube video of Sir Ian McKellen, students will deconstruct the process of creating a Shakespearean character, and how actors make famous speeches fresh and alive.

Part V: The Digital Escape Room (Spoilers)
In a combination video/ website, Shakespeare will direct the students to a digital Escape Room, a game where students pretend that the witches from Macbeth have trapped them and Shakespeare in a cursed castle, and the only way to get out is to finish a series of puzzles that cover the characters and vocabulary they learned. The Escape Room will include word searches, decoding ciphers, a sinister forest, and a clever interpretation of the famous dagger speech. The video is designed so Shakespeare allows you to solve the problems independently, or with him guiding you through them. Each puzzle you solve, you enter in a Google Form, getting you one step closer to escaping the cursed castle.

Puzzle 1: The Battlements (direction Lock)
When you click on this page, a short animation plays of the famous "Dagger speech," with a floating dagger turning in space. Your job will be to carefully note the direction the dagger is pointing, which you will enter on the Google Form

Puzzle 2: The Magic Mirror
Click on the page and look in the mirror to decipher the prophecy of whose children will eventually become king.
Bonus, if you find a second mirror on the page, you'll learn about king James I, the king who Shakespeare wrote "Macbeth" to please.

Puzzle 3: The Gate (fill in the blanks)
You will open 6 digital locks with some simple trivia questions using Flippity.com. The final one requires you to look up an old theater line used to banish the 'curse,' which you will then copy and paste into the Google Form.

Puzzle 4: The Cauldron (picture search)
You will assemble a jigsaw puzzle of a cauldron that reveals the name of the only man who can kill Macbeth.

Puzzle 5: Birnam Wood (Pattern lock)
You will see an animation of a dark forest with a series of unarmed and armed soldiers. You must count the soldiers and make careful note of how many are unarmed, and how many are armed.

Final submission:
On the Form page, you can record your responses from the previous puzzles. If you answer correctly, the Witches will let you and Shakespeare go, but if not, they will CAST YOU INTO THEIR CAULDRON!

학부모 가이드
Students will interact with a Nearpod which will have within it embedded videos from Youtube and websites such as Scratch, the digital Escape Room using Google Slides and Google Sites. The student does not need to set up any kind of account. The play "Macbeth" does reference child murder and the occult. The content of the class is PG with only moderate scary images, but nevertheless, be advised that this play may not be appropriate for children under 13. Although this class tells objective historical facts about the witch trials of the 17th century, at no point are occult rituals quoted and at no point is any religious practice endorsed.
수업 자료
A short cheat sheet will be provided to help the student know what to do in case they have trouble navigating the escape room, etc.

I specialize in Shakespeare and Astronomy, having worked in theater for over 10 years, and for two years as a professional astronomy assistant. I teach courses in Shakespeare Appreciation and Shakespearean acting, as well as basic astronomy for kids.
My strongest belief about teaching is that students need instruction that will stimulate their minds through multimedia and hands-on exercises. I believe that no subject is out of a student’s reach as long as the instructor presents it in a way that is sufficiently engaging. To this end, whenever I teach workshops or classes, I make use of my training in acting, videography, and dramaturgy in order to make whatever I teach come alive.

Summary of Experience:
- Currently working as a special education paraprofessional for the York School District
- Two years experience as Astronomy Assistant for Primland Resort (2012-2014)
-Two years experience teaching at college level Shakespeare courses
-Education Outreach director for two theatrical companies
-Proven effective Shakespeare workshops for elementary school, high school, and university-level students (2008- present)

-Master Of Fine Arts, in Shakespeare and Elizabethan Literature in Performance, Mary Baldwin College (2010)

Research/ Creative Accomplishments:

-Research paper peer-reviewed and accepted at Blackfriars academic conference (2013)
-Published articles on Blogging Shakespeare (2013- present)
-Honored at Kennedy Center for dramaturgy (2007)

Something fun about me: One summer I got to meet Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman and saw Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe onstage. I got Harry Potter bingo!
