수업 소개

I have two American Girl Doll classes that focus on Julie. This class is geared specifically to older learners. We will be going deeper with the themes and the history of the time period, as well as adding more learners in to get a richer discussion going. 

Do you have a child with a passion for justice and equal rights? If so, this class may be for you! During our 8 weeks together, we will be doing a deep dive into the American Girl doll, Julie Albright, an outspoken leader from San Francisco in the 1970s.  Every week, we will have a discussion about Julie's story and time period, as well as make crafts that reflect Julie's experiences. We will be covering all six of Julie’s books during this class, so students can expect to read one book a week once the class begins (no reading is needed prior to the class).  

This is a multidisciplinary class that explores reading strategies, historical knowledge, vocabulary integration, read aloud, geography, journaling, crafts, and more! 

Here is a sample of what to expect during a class:  

WEEK 1: An Introduction to Julie's World 
-Introduce ourselves
- Book Walk-- exploring the book we're about to read and why we're excited to read it.
-Overview of Julie's story, exploring San Fransisco and the 1970s.
-- Theme to Explore: "Equal Rights"
-Vocabulary Words: groovy, footlocker, defeated
-Homework: Read "Meet Julie", work on vocabulary, and journal about "equal rights". Make sure to have the materials to make the yarn doll next week!

WEEK 2: Discussing "Meet Julie"
-- Quick discussion about our opinions on the book
--  Main focus of class discussion: "Equal rights".  Share our journals and discuss how boys and girls were being treated differently in Julie's school, and how she reacted to that.
--Listen to the song "I Am Woman"
-- Activity: Title IX and You -- How did girls get into sports? 
-- Homework: Read "Julie Tells Her Story", pick one of Julie's categories to write about with your own life--> your first memory, your brothers and sisters, when your mom was your age, when your dad was your age, the best thing that ever happened to you, or the worst thing that's ever happened to you.  Make sure to have a houseplant ready for next class!

WEEK 3: Discussing "Julie Tells Her Story"
-- Quick discussion about our opinions of the book.
--  Share our journals.
-- Listen to the song, "We Are Family"
-- Activity: Taking care of a houseplant.
-- Theme to Explore for Book 3: Tradition
-- Homework: Read "Happy New Year, Julie" and journal about "tradition". Make sure to have your supplies ready for the New Year activity next class! If you would like, come wearing red. 

WEEK 4: Discussing "Happy New Year, Julie"
-- Quick discussion about our opinions of the book
-- Main focus of class discussion: "Tradition". Discuss journals
--Activity: Making red envelopes for Chinese New Year
-- Theme to Explore for Book 4: Activism
--Vocabulary: Endangered, donations, hack tower
--Homework: Reading "Julie and the Eagles", working on vocabulary and journal, bringing poster board and art supplies to our next class.

WEEK 5: Discussing "Julie and the Eagles"
-- Quick discussion about our opinions of the book
-- Main focus of class discussion: "Activism". 
--Song of the Week: "Imagine" 
--Activity: Making a Poster to Save an Endangered Species
-- Theme to Explore for Book 5: Patriotism
--Vocabulary: Bicentennial, prairie, pioneer
--Homework: Reading "Julie's Journey", working on vocabulary and journal.

WEEK 6: Discussing "Julie's Journey"
-- Quick discussion about our opinions of the book
--Main focus of the class discussion: Patriotism.  Share our journals.
-- Activity: Compare / Contrast Julie's World to 1776.
-- Theme to Explore for Book 6: "Friendship" 
--Homework: Read "Changes for Julie" and work on journal. 

WEEK 7: "Changes for Julie"
--Quick discussion about our thoughts on the book
--Discussion topic: "Friendship".   Share journals.
--Activity: Learning some sign language
--Homework: Final project presentation for next class!

WEEK 8: Project Party!
In this class, we will share out our final projects and discuss our lasting impressions of the book. 

This class is inclusive, which means students of all abilities are welcome. If you student needs any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure that they have the best possible class experience. 

I am excited to discuss leadership with your child! They will learn all about grit, resilience, acceptance, and love through taking this class and exploring Julie's story.

수업 자료
1. All 6 of Julie's books. (Audiobooks are fine as well!) 
2. For the envelopes: red construction paper, glue, scissors, a ruler, a pencil, and gold glitter. There will also be a template available to download from our classroom page.
3.  Poster paper and art supplies to make a poster about an endangered species 
4. Any and all handouts will be available on our classroom page.

This is my 14th year as a secondary English teacher, and my favorite units of all are interdisciplinary ones where I can combine many of my passions into one rich learning experience! Personally, I have been an avid American Girl doll collector since I was a child, and have read through the series and have done the activities with my own six year-old. I would love to share this excitement for American Girls, reading, history, and culture with your children, too!
