In this ongoing drawing course, students will learn how to sketch realistic African safari animal portraits of a lion, zebra, elephant, rhino, cheetah, and giraffe. Please note that since this is an ongoing course, students can enroll or withdraw at any time.  Each scheduled meeting will be spent sketching ONE animal.  

Week of July 2 - 8: Lion (head)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a lion. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques for sketching realistic lion's mane.
4. Students will learn a few facts about lions.

Week of July 9 - 15: Zebra (head)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a zebra. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques for sketching a stripped pattern on a zebra.
4. Students will learn a few facts about zebras.

Week of July 16 - 22: Elephant (full body)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of an elephant. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques for sketching realistic full body portrait of an elephant.
4. Students will learn a few facts about elephants.

Week of July 23 - 29: Rhino (full body)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a rhinoceros. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques for sketching realistic full body portrait of a rhinoceros.
4. Students will learn a few facts about the rhinoceros.

Week of July 30 - August 5: Cheetah (head to chest)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a cheetah. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques for sketching realistic cheetah fur (spotted pattern, fur texture, etc.).
4. Students will learn a few facts about cheetahs.

Week of August 6 - 12: Giraffe (head and part of neck)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a giraffe. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques for sketching a spotted pattern on the giraffe.
4. Students will learn a few facts about giraffes.

For each class, I will demonstrate each step for students and have students complete that step along with me.  My classroom is a calm, fun, and creative environment where discussion between teacher and students is encouraged.  I ask students questions throughout the lesson to check for student understanding.  Students may also interact with each other if they want to share what they have learned during class.  Students who enroll in this class should have basic drawing skills, like drawing and manipulating shapes with a pencil.  Students who enroll in this class should have drawing experience.
