Come listen to a great African Folktale passed down from generations. The students will engage in a story time session, and hear the tale of why the hippopotamus lives in water. The students will listen to the story and have an opportunity to ask questions at the end. They will have a time of poetry where they will recite "I Can" by Mary Evans. The class is structured: Ice Breakers (Do you like ice cream of cake?) African Proverb (If you're too small to make a difference ask a mosquito.) Opening Question to prime the story Read aloud Question and Answer Share poem Choral reading of the poem Closing

My educational background is in language and literacy (PhD). I am a professor of literacy practices and have taught reading instruction for over 15 years, prepared pre-service teaches for the profession of teaching, and was an elementary school teacher. I engage in many reading strategies and read a louds is one of them, along with reader's theater. Reader’s theater is a literacy strategy and performative tool I have implemented in all my classes (K-college); it is one of my areas of research; I have years of experience writing and directing plays in my classroom and doing community reader’s theater at the library.
