In this class the students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. I will show the students the procedure for adding and subtracting the fractions on the whiteboard. The steps to figuring out the problems include first finding the least common multiple, and then figuring out the equivalent fraction to make adding and subtracting the fraction easier. After this I will go over some example problems with the students. After we go through the examples we will complete a worksheet together. I may also teach another strategy called the butterfly to see which way the students like best. The students should have background knowledge in adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and basic fractions in order to do this lesson.
