Does your child learn best with a hands-on approach? By engaging in multi-sensory lessons - movement, hands-on activities, and games - learners will interact with and demonstrate understanding of new skills in several different ways. I believe in building relationships with students, creating a risk-friendly class environment, and using interactive lessons to motivate students to learn. The result is typically that we all have fun and the children learn a lot along the way! This class is the second of four quarter-long classes. Upon completion of all four courses, students will have learned the fourth grade math skills as stated in the Common Core Standards (see topic sequence below). Students will need materials (that are typically found around the home) for this class to fully participate in the hands-on activities in the class. Each week, resources will be provided by the teacher for practice with the skill at home. Students will apply the skills they've learned by completing project based activities during the semester. An end-of-class assessment will be given the final week of the class and parents will be provided with a progress report providing information of how well their child mastered the objectives taught. In class, learners will participate in whole class discussions as well as small group work in breakout rooms. Learners need to have the tech skills to communicate via Zoom chat, go between tabs, and use interactive learning software. Nearpod, Google Jamboard, and Classkick will be used to allow learners to collaborate and share work during class. If your child will be joining class from a tablet, please make sure to download these free apps to their device. I will provide a username and password for your child to have a Classkick Portfolio which will store their work for the duration of the course. No personal information is required for the account. Blooket and Gimkit games will be used to practice skills in a fun way with some friendly competition. The sequence of lessons/skills for Action Math: Quarter 2 - Number Operations, Measurement, and Money are as follows: -Week 1: Multiplication -Week 2: Multiplication and division -Week 3: Division -Week 4: Division and project based learning activities - Planning a Vacation -Week 5: Graphing -Week 6: Perimeter and area -Week 7: Decimal place value and money -Week 8: Project based learning activities - Build a House & Quarter 2 Assessment Materials needed for Quarter 2 are: -lined paper and pencil (all classes) -white board and dry erase marker (all classes) -handouts provided by teacher to be printed (some classes) -deck of playing cards (some classes) -two 6-sided dice (some classes) ***This class will typically meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week but may be adjusted for holidays. There will be a break between quarters to allow for potential make up days.*** The other courses for Action Math: Grade 4 are: -Quarter 1 - Place Value & Number Operations -Quarter 3 - Fraction Operations -Quarter 4 - Geometry & Measurement **See other course descriptions for complete list of skills.**

Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.
When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
