This is the third session of a year long Project Based Middle School Ancient History course. Learners will discover the many facets of Ancient Greek Civilization through visual lectures, hands on project based learning, and interactive Nearpod lessons. Students will gain an in depth understanding of life in Ancient Greece.
I have been teaching both World History and American History to Middle Schoolers and Elementary aged kids for about 6 years now. History is my passion and I have traveled the world, visiting many ancient and neolithic sites, studying and working with local historians, and writing. I have worked with archivists and read hundreds of first hand accounts of war, famine, and every day experiences of the old ways of life from baking bread to making soap. It has also been my ongoing education to voraciously read history books, both of ancient history, and most importantly, newly written historical commentaries that look at and analyze our previously written histories with an intention to decolonize the way we view history. I have lived off and on oversees for the past 25 years in a country that has faced tremendous challenges, therefore I have a unique insight into the importance of telling history from different angles and an understanding of the importance of more than one story being expressed.

At the end of the first class of each week, students will be assigned homework that will be due by the second class of the week. These assignments will call on students to think about what they have learned, possibly seek out new information, or even complete a challenge. 3-D Map of Ancient Greece: Salt dough or play dough, toothpicks, glue stick, paper to cut for labels For the Model of the Greek City-State: Clay, Plastic building blocks, Minecraft, or any other materials of choice For Mosaic: Options include: Mosaic pieces that can be purchased on Amazon or at craft stores, sticky foam cut into mosaic squares, or construction paper cut into squares (and a glue stick) Parthenon Model: Options include: Foam block sets from craft stores (usually in 1 inch blocks), plastic building blocks, clay, cardboard (only if a parent can help pre-cut the pieces before class) Hellenistic Sculpture- White or Grey air dry clay and tools I'd also suggest purchasing this book or checking it out from the library for learners to read during this session to be immersed in Greek History & Mythology: https://www.amazon.com/DAulaires-Greek-Myths-Ingri-dAulaire/dp/0440406943/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2M4KV99GQ1ADQ&dchild=1&keywords=greek+myths+for+kids&qid=1616001726&sprefix=greek+myths+for+%2Caps%2C219&sr=8-2 The Percy Jackson Series would also be a fun addition for learners.
During week 2, the project is maker style and students have an option to create their labyrinth from cardboard, Legos, blocks or more. If they choose cardboard, they will require someone to oversee the cutting of the cardboard for safety reasons, or they will need someone to cut cardboard into long possibly 2-3 inch wide strips. Week 5 includes a project that uses scratch art. Students will need a large piece of cardboard precut by a parent into a circle. Also, we will coat a cardboard shield with crayon, paint black paint over it, and scratch a design into it. A small scratch tool might require parental guidance.
