**I don’t currently have any sessions available so please consider scheduling for a private session to cover the material you are interested in: https://outschool.com/classes/human-biology-and-pre-medical-tutoring-Hsi2mRuU#usXhgNAFKP This class is one of several that I've designed to meet the needs of students who have learned a little about individual organ systems (the lungs, the heart, the bones, etc) but are lacking an understanding of how it all fits together. In most science classes for 3rd-7th graders, the organs are treated as separate entities without explaining how they coordinate to keep us alive. In reality, our body is an amazing machine in which every organ system directly interacts with and supports every other organ system. In this class, we'll be looking specifically at the life cycle of red blood cells. They are made in the bone marrow, circulate through the lungs to collect oxygen, pumped by the heart throughout the body to deliver that oxygen to individual cells, and only survive about 3-4 months. After 3-4 months, they are broken down into component parts (such as iron and bilirubin) and recycled. The iron is reused in new red blood cells and the bilirubin is used to make bile to aid in the digestion of fats, which is what makes your poop brown--without it, your poop would be white. So by learning about the life cycle of one small cell, we travel through the heart, lungs, bones, liver/spleen, gallbladder, small intestine, and large intestine. I will use models and Socratic questioning to keep the class interactive and interesting and provide direct instruction to weave everything together. We will use a coloring/note sheet created just for this class as an outline during class and a memory aid after class. We do not spend significant time on the iron or oxygen, as those are separate one-time classes. The classes are designed to be taken in any order but together create a deeper understanding of how our body systems all work together. It is helpful, but not necessary, to understand the parts of a cell prior to taking this class. If your learner hasn't covered this yet, I do offer a class on how to draw a human cell: https://outschool.com/classes/draw-and-discuss-a-human-cell-the-cookie-factory-inside-us-y995yObt#usXhgNAFKP Other One-Time Classes in this series are: Pumping Iron: Follow Iron From Digestion to Recycling or Blood Loss Breathe In: Oxygen's Trip Through the Body From Lungs to Cells Hemochromatosis: One Disease, Many Organs (Heart, Liver, Intestines, Pancreas)
학습 목표
Students will develop an understandiing of how the seemingly separate organ systems in the human body actually work together in amazing ways!

Nothing in this class will be or is intended to be medical advice. This is merely educational in nature and will be a surface-level overview. Your student will not be coming out of this class knowing anything about how to diagnose or treat related conditions and we will not be discussing any personal medical questions/needs. Students should come with general questions about the topic.

As a family physician with a decade in private practice, I love teaching young people about how their bodies work. I believe that people who understand their bodies will take better care of them. After teaching nearly 1000 students on Outschool, many of whom stay with me long term, I am an expert at taking the high level science and making it accessible to young people.
