In this one-time course, students will learn about September 11th through a history lesson and discussion of the events that happened that day. Then we will go through a discussion of the events while also studying some of the rationale and justifications that America used to convince its people to go to war. We will end with a rhetorical analysis of President Bush's speech, a masterpiece and an exemplar of emotional appeals.

- Discuss with Peers led by the TeacherI enjoy teaching this unit immensely and if your student likes English and History, I highly suggest taking this course! I have taught many book studies in my professional career, but every year I revisit this lesson and take a break from the "normal" courses I cover to do this one. I am currently running multiple novel studies and single course options on Outschool that have been met with great success and interest. I love taking part in discussions and ensuring that the students' needs and interests are met as they read. Discussion is such an important tool in this lesson and students ability to feel comfortable with one another is so important and I work hard to establish that with students before we move on.
Students will be discussing 9/11 which was an emotional and very tragic day. Students are encouraged to open up and identify moments of struggle and are welcome to do so verbally or privately in the chat. The chat will be used as a tool for checking-in with students constantly to gauge how they are feeling and handling the emotion and intensity of this particular historical event. As a teacher who has done this lesson all five years of her teaching career, it is a lesson that I think cannot be ignored and needs to be addressed so that the events of that day are never forgotten.
