This is a supplemental 7th Grade Math Enrichment course, intended to support students already enrolled in a full math curriculum course. Learners are welcome to join at any time. This course runs late August through May and students will be taught the monumental learning objectives from the top four units within 7th grade math. The top four units are Number Systems, Ratios and Proportions, Expressions and Equations, and Geometry. Each 50 minute session will include a 15 to 20 minute mini lesson from the teacher and allow for an estimated 30 minutes of activities and practice. Sessions will allow students to engage with math content while the teacher facilitates learning. Lessons will be as interactive as necessary for student engagement but, will never lose sight of the core concepts of the lesson. Math For The Middles teaching style is based around student empowerment and encouraging students to THINK. We always win or we learn. I emphasize the phrase, "I learned over, I failed" to maximize learning opportunities for students. • The Number System (10 Weeks Aug 30- Oct 31) Week of Aug 29th- Concepts of adding positive and negative integers -20 to 20. Week of Sept 5th- Building fluency of adding positive and negative integers from at least -100 to 100 and more Week of Sept 12th- Concepts of subtracting positive and negative integers -20 to 20 Week of Sept 19th- Building fluency of subtracting positive and negative integers from at least -100 to 100 and subtopics Week of Sept 26th- Multiplying positive and negative integers Week of Oct 3rd- Dividing positive and negative integers Week of Oct 10th- Adding and subtracting rational numbers ( Pos/Neg Decimals) Week of Oct 17th- Adding and subtracting rational numbers (Pos/Neg Fractions) Week of Oct 24th- Multiplying and dividing positive and negative decimals Week of Oct 31st- Multiplying and dividing positive and negative fractions • Ratios and Proportional Relationships (9 weeks, Nov 2- Jan 22) Week of Nov 7th- Converting fractions to decimals Week of Nov 14th- Converting decimals to percents Week of Nov 21st- No Class Week of Nov 28th-Matching fractions, decimals, and percents Week of Dec 5th- Calculating a percent of a value Week of Dec 12th- Calculating a percent of a value Week of Dec 19th- No Class Week of Dec 26th- No Class Week of Jan 2nd- Percent problem solving with sales and discounts Week of Jan 9th- Percent problem solving with taxes and interest Week of Jan 16th- Intro to unit rates Week of Jan 24th- Algebraically expressing unit rates Week of Jan 31st- Graphing unit rates • Expressions and Equations (February-Mar ) • Geometry (April - May)

Danielle Jones, Founder of Math For The Middles
I am a holistic and proud urban math teacher intentionally using my classroom influence to empower students from all walks of life. My organization's objective is to build life-long learners equipped to detect and conquer the explicit and implicit math seamlessly absorbed into our everyday lives. We strive to supply a palpable meaning and use to a contents' existence that can either empower you or disenfranchise your life long decision making skills. Math For The Middles' motto is, "Enlighten, Empower, Release and Repeat". My professional background includes over 6 years of teaching a combination of middle school and high school Pre Algebra and Algebra 1. Throughout my career I've been awarded Student Mentorship Awards and Teacher of the Month. I am also 2x finalist for teacher of Teacher of the Year in my building.
What's our take on "NEW MATH" aka Common Core?
Truthfully, we don't believe there is a new math. Math exists with or without our acknowledgement.
However, we understand the frustration. At Math For The Middles, our strategies are based in mathematical accuracy. Learners are taught to conceptually understand concepts, become fluent with procedures and algorithms and best of all be able to reason mathematically. This means we use whatever strategy works best for enrolled learners and we do not exclude any methods that hold up mathematically nor exclusively use only one method. "It's okay to carry the one with us😉"
