As we do some simple fun science experiments, we will learn the process of writing a good lab report. *Please note that I prefer students to keep their video open while in my lab classroom and keep chatroom conversation to a minimum. No knowledge of this method is required prior to the class. I do suggest having a pencil and paper handy for note-taking. Plus, print the Word document we will use to fill in for experiments that will be presented during class. The scientific method will play an important role in designing a great lab report. Each day we will do a simple experiment. Students have the option to participate. However, lab supplies must be collected prior to the class. If you know your child cannot handle doing both the lab and write down information, you may want him or her to just focus on the writing. It is not necessary to do the experiments during class time. Class 1 Chemistry - Vocabulary and Step by Step Lab Report Layout The question to the lab. Diffusion Lab Supplies: two identical clear drinking glasses or jars, cold water, hot water, and food coloring. Class 2 Physics - Simple Lab and step by step instructions on the layout of the lab report. Air Resistance Lab: 3 sheets of paper Class 3 Physics - Lab and students will use their skills in writing a lab report as a group. Density and Pressure Lab: 3 Boiled Eggs, 2 Tall Drinking Glass, Box of Salt, Water, narrow mouthed bottle like a Starbucks glass bottle, long fire starter (like a Bic lighter), and paper. Class 4 Chemistry: Aerobic or Anaerobic (DANGEROUS-must have parental supervision) Students will view an experiment and then write a report that can be submitted for review. (optional if they would like teacher feedback) Materials you will need a cookie sheet that you bake cookies on made out of aluminum or an aluminum pie pan, steel tongs, a long lighter that you light up a fire with but not a cigarette lighter because it's too short, and fine steel wool. Mom must be around to supervise you to do this. If you cannot get the supplies, don't worry. I will demonstrate it. Class 5 Student experiment-The student will design an experiment to present to the teacher with a full written lab report for evaluation of this course. Disclaimer: Please note that if two students do not enroll I will cancel the course. Please forward to friends that may be interested in order for it to move forward.

Students will learn what is an independent variable, dependent variable and control in an experiment. They will be able to write an effective lab report upon completion of the course.

Optional:
If students prefer to do the lab along with the teachers, parents may need to assist in getting the supplies ready for their child.
The fourth day is DANGEROUS since we will be using fire. Parental supervision is important. This is optional and not mandatory. I will gladly demonstrate.

Having taught numerous labs over a period of thirty-five years, I have seen so many of my students begin writing lab reports and have discovered their inability to write a presentable report. I strive at having my students inquire and be explicit (for their grade level) on how to present them. Even though the labs are simple, there is a thought process needed to write a great lab report.
