미국 4학년 - 5학년 학년
In this highly interactive summer camp with a child-appropriate humorous teacher, learners will learn, or better understand, important concepts and skills about fractions. They will advance beyond adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, to fractions with unlike denominators. The students will learn, or solidify their understanding about, what an equivalent fraction is and acquire an effective strategy for reducing fractions that is better than dividing numerators and denominators in half. It will be helpful if your child(ren) has/have sufficiently learned beforehand the concept of multiplication and enough of the multiplication tables, to be able to figure out factors of numbers; for example, what two numbers multiplied together can make 42. Through lively discussions, visuals such as clearly conceived drawings (drawn by both me and the learners), and connecting their learning to their everyday world, students will gain mastery and confidence in these crucial common core concepts and skills! Although this content is typically in the 4th and 5th grade common core learning standards, this class is open to all learners around that age level who are at that point of math learning where they are ready, or need, to learn this. Depending on learner needs/readiness and the flow of class, here is a general guide on the specifics the students will do each day: Class 1: Students will progress from adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, to what to do when the denominators are not the same. They will use examples from their daily lives and enhance/solidify their understanding with visuals both I and the learners create. Class 2: Students will use a method which involves factors and identifies the least common factor of two numbers. Students will apply this learning to solve simple addition problems with fractions. Class 3: Students will continue to add fractions with unlike denominators and then use the same skills to solve subtraction problems with fractions of unlike denominators. Depending on learner readiness, the complexity of the problems may increase. Class 4: Students will reduce fractions by creating factor trees to understand what it means to reduce fractions. They will connect their results with visuals that illustrate their results, and they will tackle fraction reducing problems on their own. Class 5: Students will continue solidifying their skills and practicing by solving problems. Depending on learner readiness, the complexity of the problems may increase. I am looking forward to seeing you!

The learners should have paper (which could be a notebook) and a pencil with a good eraser (mistakes are a part of learning!). Colored pencils, crayons, or water-based ink markers would be helpful to make their drawings more lively and easy to understand.

Having tutored elementary school-aged students in math for over 30 years (including on Outschool since I started with our platform), I taught mostly elementary school science during my 33-year teaching career in brick-and-mortar schools. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class. I also have an artistic side of me, and I often have used my drawings to enhance the kids' learning.
