In these ongoing sessions, your student will strengthen their reading skills through practice. I'll have a variety of books for your student to read, including books that my son and daughter loved when they were little. I'll kindly help students sound out difficult words phonetically, and we'll pause every so often to talk about the story together.

I believe that the key to learning to read is for children to become excited about books. Enthusiasm for books leads to a lifetime of reading! I love finding stories that a child falls in love with.

The pages of the books will be seen by the student from my screen. Students will be encouraged to take their time and sound out difficult words. Speed will be gained with practice.

The books will be chosen based on each individual student's reading level and interest. If there are subject matters that a parent does not want addressed, please message me before class to let me know. If a student has a particular interest, I would love to know that as well!

I have many times available! Parents can message me to set up a time.

Please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you!

-Ms. Cristal

My Teaching Approach:
I want to make the class experience fun for the students because one of the main goals of the class is to encourage students to love reading. Students will be taught to take their time while reading rather than to feel pressure to read quickly. I will have students sound out difficult words, and I will be patient as they work to figure out the words. I will help students with difficult sounds or words if they are struggling. I welcome parents to message me with information on their individual students' learning styles and interests, and I will adjust the lesson to their needs. I attempt to make the classroom comfortable for all learners. The books chosen for practice will be customized for each student. If a student tries a book and does not find it interesting, we can switch to another book. However, if a student is struggling and wants to give up, they will be encouraged to keep trying, and I will give the support and help as needed. I will let parents know if a student has behavior problems. If a student has trouble paying attention, I will adjust the class to keep their attention, and also discuss with the parent if I am not able to keep the students' attention during class.

What learners can expect from class:
-At the beginning of a student's first class, I will have the student name letters of the alphabet and read a few sentences so I can choose books that are at the students' reading level.
-Then we will begin reading books! The student will read the pages of the book, and I will help when needed. We will occasionally stop and discuss the story. This could include our opinions of the characters, the theme, the plot, and predictions. If a student struggles with a word, I will step into help. If a student reads a word incorrectly, I will wait until the page has been read, then go back to the word to discuss it. We will also discuss difficult vocabulary words. After the book is over, we will discuss whether we liked the book, whether we liked the plot's resolution, and which characters were our favorite.
-After class, I will email parents letting them know what books we read, how the student did in class, and any new topics, vocabulary words, or ideas that we discussed in class.
