We will work on the books together using Nearpod, an interactive app (free to you), but learners will also be able to use that lesson in student-paced form in between classes to practice and solidify the concepts and vocabulary that we worked on. 1st Grade Q1 Leveled Reading is for learners to focus on beginner 1st grade leveled books at a D and E level to help them work on natural reading skills. Classes are live with a teacher and interactive using the Nearpod app! Each lesson will focus on getting through two books: one D level and one E level. According to U.S. standards, D and E leveled readers are considered the 1st quarter of a 1st grade reading level. In the U.S. all children should be starting 1st grade reading at a minimum of a D level. This is a great ongoing course to get learners used to reading books, only reading the words they see, blending words that they don't know together, and using context and comprehension skills to practice critical thinking skills. When we work with beginner readers, it can be quite difficult to find properly scored books for them. Children's books are not written at a child's reading level. I N T H I S C O U R S E: We will read two books each lesson: Levels: ✅D Level = 1st Grade Quarter 1 ✅E Level = 1st Grade Quarter 1 We will practice: ✅Fluency ✅Vocabulary ✅Sight Words ✅High Frequency Words ✅Using Context + Phonics Skills to Identify New Words ✅Comprehension Practice This course does not focus primarily on phonics. This way, kids not only learn via visual and auditory learning, they get to learn kinesthetically as well since they are physically involved in the lesson with simple games such as matching, drawing, memory tests, drag & drop features, and everyone's favorite - Time to Climb. Time to Climb is an interactive quiz where each child chooses a character for the game and as they answer questions correctly, their character races other students to the top of a mountain. Parents and/or guardians, please read the classroom announcements page prior to class to get your learner set up before class begins. Your learner may also need help throughout the lesson to complete the games and use the features, at least at the beginning of the course. This class is for young learners who may not fully understand how to click on a computer or set up NearPod on their own.
All communications will be updated via the classroom page, so please have your notifications turned on. This way Outschool will forward any and all classroom posts to your email so you don't miss any announcements.

WHAT IS NEARPOD? NearPod is an interactive, online resource that we use for class. NearPod includes games relevant to the lesson to keep learners engaged the entire time since there is something for them to be focusing on and physically doing every few minutes. This can include little quizzes, matching, drag & drop, drawing, 3D, virtual reality, etc. NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in addition to Zoom. If available, two devices is ideal for these classes. Most of my students like to have Zoom up on one device and NearPod on a touch device such as a tablet, iPad, or smartphone to make clicking on answers easy for little fingers. Cassondra Shields (Ms. Cassie):
Cassondra has been an ESL (English as a second language) teacher for four years to the age groups 3-15. She graduated from the Honor's Program at The University of Nevada, Reno with a research thesis on adolescent conduct disorder attributes and how those attributes were statistically represented in adult incarceration and recidivism rates based on longitudinal study results. In order to conduct this type of research, Cassondra studied behavior, neurology, and psychology of children for several years as well as additional English and writing courses to write about this type of research. She has brought her expertise on child development and learning behaviors to Outschool as the curriculum developer for Shields Scholars. Cassondra is also a homeschool mom to her own children.

Rheagan Bloomquist (Ms. Rheagan):
Rheagan earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University-San Antonio. She has a passion for helping people, and she believes every child can succeed when given the chance. She has experience working with elementary school children in her local independent school district. She also has prior experience teaching special needs kids. What Rheagan wants most is to make education exciting rather than scary; her goal is to help all children feel welcome, safe, and smart. She is excited to create a nurturing and fun learning environment for all children with Shield’s Scholars.

Kirste Van Liew (Ms. Kirste):
Kirste earned her Bachelor’s degree from Moody Bible Institute, and she holds a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). She has valuable teaching experience at an international school in Tunis, Tunisia. She has tutored students from various countries, including Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Kurdistan, and China. She is passionate about helping children thrive in their learning and loves encouraging them to recognize their progress from the very beginning to where they are now. She believes that parents are the real youth leaders and is here to support and encourage the family as they effectively lead their homes and come alongside their children to encourage and help them grow with a passion for learning.
