The purpose of a resume is not to get you a job, but to get you an interview. How can you make sure your resume is targeted and well-designed so that you will get noticed? By role-playing as hiring managers, students will review sample resumes of high school students for a hypothetical summer job. As we review the resumes, we will discuss the purpose of each component and how students can make their own resumes stand out. Common resume mistakes and faux pas will be hidden among the resumes for us to identify and discuss. Students will need to reach a consensus on which applicants they want to call for an interview. We will conclude the class by discussing the decision process they used for choosing their favorite applicants and the insights they gained from this activity. I am also happy to answer questions about resumes and the interview process in general.

Students will be able to explain why elements of a sample resume are strong or need improvement.
Students will practice identifying ways to improve a resume and to strengthen their descriptions of skills and achievements.
