This class is also offered in quarters meeting twice a week for 45 minutes. All classes are taught to the level and ability of learners.

In this semester long multi-day course we will meet twice a week to cover the required skills of fourth graders in the United States. The course will be taught using an I do, we do, you do teaching strategy. Each class will begin with a spiral review to keep skills going and end with students explaining a skill that they developed that day, or that they need to strengthen. This information will be used to design the spiral review for the next class meeting. Every class will involve teacher instruction, student discussion, student practice time and when appropriate working with a partner and/or small group through breakout rooms. Teacher instruction will involve the use of models, manipulatives and standard algorithm. Students will keep a journal of the work they complete throughout the course, extended practice will be given at the end of each class for the students to continue practice on the taught skill.
Skills taught in the course will be based on the National Common Core Standards for fourth grade. This course is designed for current fourth graders or fifth graders that need to review the fourth grade curriculum. Every 4 class sessions students will receive an assessment during the last 15 minutes of class. This will give guidance to the teacher to plan spiral reviews for next class meetings. This class will regularly include discussions among students to share strategies of solving problems.
Scope and Sequence of the course is listed below:
Week 1: Number Sense:
Day 1: Place Value using the base 10 system- Writing numbers in expanded form, standard form, and word form. Instruction will include using place value charts and playing games.
Day 2: Rounding to any place value- Strategies will include using number lines and the value of the digits
Week 2: Number Sense Continued:
Day 1: Adding and Subtracting Numbers- Strategies on this day will include standard algorithm, regrouping, counting up and using number lines
Day 2: Multiply 4 digit by 1 digit and 2 digit by 2 digit numbers- Strategies on this day will include standard algorithm, partial products, and arrays. Homework this day will be an assessment of skills already taught.
Week 3: Number Sense Continued:
Day 1: Division- Strategies on this day will include- standard algorithm and partial quotients (repeated subtraction). We will complete long division problems ranging from 2 digit divided by 1 digit with remainders to 4 digit divided by 1 digit.
Day 2: Word Problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers. Students will learn to create a KWL chart to help them analyze the story problem to determine the determine the correct strategy for the problem at hand.
Week 4: Fractions
Day 1: Finding factors- Using factor rainbows and factor trees. We will use multiplication tables to develop equivalent fractions using factors and multiples. We will also work on comparing fractions once equivalents have been found. We will conduct a discussion and activity related to prime and composite numbers during this time.
Day 2: Add and subtract common fractions and mixed numbers. Strategies this day will include number lines, models and standard algorithm. Homework this day will be an assessment of learned skills to determine future spiral reviews.
Week 5: Fractions
Day 1: Add fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 using standard algorithm and common denominators.
Day 2: Multiply fractions by whole numbers. Taught using models and standard algorithm
Week 6: Decimals
Day 1: Place value for decimals through the hundredths place. We will use number lines, hundreds grids and place value charts to demonstrate the value of the decimals. Using the grids will allow students to understand the relationship between fractions and decimals through hundredths.
Day 2: Comparing decimals through the hundredths place using charts, number lines, and models. Homework this day will be an assessment of learned skills to determine future spiral reviews
Week 7: Word Problems
Day 1: Solving single step word problems involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals using the KWL chart to analyze problems.
Day 2: Multi-step word problems involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals using the KWL chart to analyze problems.
Week 8: Algebraic Thinking
Day 1: Introduction of variables and how they are used in mathematical expressions. Complete word problems by writing equations using variables with the information from the KWL chart that they create.
Day 2: Generate patterns- using tables an x, y labels students will create mathematical expressions explaining the patterns. Homework this day will be an assessment of learned skills to determine future spiral reviews
Week 9- Geometry
Day 1: Using models students will identify lines, line segments, rays and angles. Students will be given models and will need to give a written explanation, using the vocabulary, to describe the model they are given. They may work in partners to create their description.
Day 2: Students will find the perimeter and area of rectangular shapes that have missing dimensions. Teacher will discuss real world situations where the perimeter of a figure is required. Students will then be given a real world example to work with partners to create an equation needed to find the perimeter using variables. They will need to complete the problem and present to the group their solution.
Week 10- Measurement
Day 1: teacher will demonstrate different angles showing how a circle is 360 degrees by using a protractor. Students will complete activities using the protractor to measure degrees of different angles.
Day 2: Conversions we will use real world examples to convert from larger units to smaller units. Homework this day will be an assessment of learned skills during the class.
