I am an autistic adult who has been working with autistic children and teens as well as students who have other sensory differences for 5 years as a tutor, community support worker, and classroom aide. Not only do I have both personal and professional experience with autism but I also have 10 years of teaching experience and an associate's degree in special education. I have worked with many autistic children and teens who are all in different places on the spectrum and have different, unique, strengths, and challenges. Relating directly to the topic of empathy, I have learned in working with so many different types of students that very often when a student is thought to be lacking empathy they are actually feeling empathy but are unable to recognize it or act on it on a way that is recognizable.
