From the 20th century on, classical music has gone through periods of upheaval and diversification, from post-tonality, to minimalism, to electro-acoustic music. Each week we will listen to and discuss a new composer or composition concept of the 20th and 21st centuries, discussing the historical and developmental background of each, as well as their influence on later music, both classical and popular.

Students must have access to Youtube to view and hear musical examples in class. Pen/pencil and paper, or word processing software are recommended for writing brief reflections and taking notes on music and discussions. Any necessary hand-outs or other materials will be provided.
