Students will understand the basic types of written expression (persuasive, expository, and narrative).
Students will learn about and demonstrate understanding of rhetorical strategies.
Students will demonstrate understanding of, and proficiency in, each step of the writing process.
Students will produce writing samples regularly to practice skills.

I have nearly two decades of experience as a high school English Language Arts teacher, throughout which I have helped thousands of students of widely varying ability levels become more confident and proficient writers.  In addition, I have a dozen years of one-to-one tutoring experience, focusing on test preparation (SAT, ACT, PSAT, etc.) as well as reading comprehension, grammar, and the writing process.

Students will be given a short writing assignment based on the skills/processes we learned in that class.  Assignments between classes during the week will be shorter; those falling over a weekend will be more elaborate.

In addition to utilizing assorted writing samples, rubrics, and organizers, the course will use as its main resource the book The Simple Guide to The Writing Process by Patricia Martin.
