This one time class will address what is meant by race, its role in history in colonialism and war, how it is treated around the world today, and how it is addressed through anthropology. As an anthropologist, I will discuss the role of race in our research and the history of the field and many of the arguments surrounding it. This class will answer the question about what race is and how it is defined in different societies. I will cover the ways it's seen in politics, both today and...
I am an anthropologist studying political anthropology. I currently hold a Master's in Anthropology from Binghamton University and am in their PhD program conducting my dissertation research. Anthropological training in academia includes learning about human evolution, race and racism, colonialism, cultural diversity, cultural awareness and education, bias, reflexivity, impacts of academic research on minority groups, and research ethics. I am also the Educational Coordinator and Lead Teacher of a Sunday school and a substitute teacher in 5 local school districts. I give talks on issues of religion, politics, and race issues, and have taught classes related to this topic previously. I conducted a thesis paper for my undergraduate on conflicts international students faced, which discussed issues of race, religion, language, cultural misunderstandings, and xenophobia. My Master's research focused on immigration issues, racism towards immigrants from Ethiopia in Israel, and conflict between religious sects. I also run a group that addresses issues of race, religion, politics, and teaches cultural awareness and diversity through education of traditions, history, and music from around the world. I also am a NY certified full time high school social studies teacher.

The course will cover sensitive topics that include race and issues of historical and modern-day violence. There will be imagery used that pertain to these topics and could be viewed as upsetting. I will be mitigating this by discussing with the students present their comfort level about imagery and providing the options of discussion without imagery. The imagery adds to the understanding and weight of the information, but the student's comfort and mental health is important, so I will skip that part if the students present require it. The course will focus on facts through statistics and historical data and how anthropologists study it.
