                                                             CLASS OVERVIEW

This ongoing reading class is "jam-packed" with phonics instruction and fun as it follows the adventures of a cute little sister and brother named - JoJo and Jake. This class series will include practice in silent-e, consonant blends, and common digraphs. Feel free to jump in at any time as concepts are continually practiced and reinforced. Although each week "features" a different sound, all the sounds contained in this unit of study are utilized and reinforced throughout.

Students will practice and solidify new sounds through reading and interactive activities. We will follow the adventures of JoJo and Jake as they do things like go camping, ride a train, and meet a whale and a dolphin. All sounds will be continually reinforced, however, each week will feature a different sound. Classes are fun, colorful, and packed with practice. My teaching style is welcoming, kind, and patient, so students always feel right at home. Each child will have ample opportunity to interact within the classroom. Students are sure to enjoy getting to know JoJo and Jake as they take one more step toward becoming independent readers.

EXPECTATIONS FOR IN CLASS SOUND QUALITY/MUTING

I will always encourage all students to participate in the class experience.
My desire is to have all students unmuted for the entire class. It creates an ease of interacting and answering questions without having to use time muting and unmuting. In order for this to take place, it is important to have your student situated in a quiet place that is free from background noises such as televisions, radios, phone calls, or conversations. Basic Rule of Thumb: If you can hear it....so can the entire class.

As the teacher, there are times that I will need to use the mute function. If a student has background noise that may be distracting to other students, I will let the student know that they are being muted to help the sound quality.

I realize that there are times when you may need to mute your own child for privacy reasons or due to unavoidable background noise, so please feel free to use your discretion in these circumstances. Also, please show your child how to unmute him/herself when asked to do so.

Working together, we can attain great sound quality for all the students!

At the beginning of each class, I will remind the students of class guidelines.
Students should raise their hand and wait to be called on if they have a question. As students follow this plan, it will give all the students a chance to participate and ensure a good listening atmosphere.

                                                   TENTATIVE INSTRUCTION OUTLINE:

My name is Cherie Steele. I am a mother of five fabulous kids, all of whom I’ve completely homeschooled. I have twenty years of experience as a curriculum author, private tutor, online teacher, a private co-op teacher, and a homeschool teacher.

I am a graduate of Penn State University and trained in the teaching of Intensive Phonics. I hold TESOL and TEFL certifications as well. In addition, I have a strong background in music, having completed 3 years of study in music and vocal performance at JDF Records in Nashville, TN. Locally, I have taught private piano and voice.

For the past twenty years, one of my great loves has been teaching language arts. Reading, writing, grammar, literature, and poetry are my passions. From ensuring that young students have a firm foundation in phonics to training older students to become great writers, it is my goal to establish a love of language arts in children.

I have logged thousands of online classes worldwide with students ranging in age from three to eighteen. I currently teach children in ten countries weekly, with classes ranging from reading and phonics for the "littles," to grammar and creative writing for the older children. I love the smiles and energy of the "littles" and the inquisitiveness and knowledge base of the older students.

Your student will feel right at home in my classroom. I am a patient teacher, and I love to bring smiles and a feeling of accomplishment. My goal is simple...lay solid foundations and build upon them with quality material.

I am excited to meet your student.

See you in class! :)
