In this unique class which overlaps topics in peace studies with World History and American History, students will explore several different alliances and shared causes for political justice between Ireland, Native Americans, and Africans. The course will include both lecture, classroom slides, question and answer with the instructor, and open forum discussion between students, the ratio between these modes determined by how active students learn and the amount of their background knowledge. ...
Students will make connections between peace and conflict studies inside American History, European History, and the Pan-African movement. As with all social studies courses, students will learn how to use primary and secondary sources as evidence and understand how historians and political scientists construct arguments and narratives. Critical race theory also underlies the assumptions of this course, and students will learn how this theory applies to practice, as well as all our lives.
At Suffolk University, I studied Irish history with Prof. David Robbins, as well as a variety of history and political science courses on Black history and Pan-African studies. I also worked with professors and other advisors on my research in the field, including Prof. Monica McWilliams from Queens University, Belfast, and Prof. Tom Lodge, then at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on the negotiation of political conflict in Northern Ireland and South Africa, towards by B.S. from Suffolk University in political science. I living in both nations while doing my field research, putting myself into the field and places of conflict. Professor O'Malley served as one of my academic advisors, and I worked with the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition during Northern Ireland's negotiations. In South Africa, I worked for an NGO associated with the Democratic Party and interviewed those who negotiated the end of apartheid.
I'll provide open access resources.
