We will begin our class with a look at the life cycle of Monarch Butterflies, and their amazing transformation from egg to chrysalis to butterfly. Students will learn about environmental factors that have affected the Monarch's habitat and population. We will also learn how scientist tag butterflies to track their migration routes from Canada all the way to central Mexico.
I will teach students how to use symmetry to create a Monarch drawing, which we will complete with markers. Classes are taught with step by step instruction and positive reinforcement. My goal is to create a fun learning environment that encourages creativity and self expression while learning about art.

Hi! My name is Jami.
My teaching philosophy is student centered. I believe that students are capable of doing great work at any age, and my job is to inspire and empower them to think and work like artists. In my classroom, I am the facilitator and guide, giving students the space to create and solve artistic problems.
I have always liked to make things... as a child I was always drawing, or creating things from found objects that I picked up along my way. As an artist, I still use artifacts to embellish my sculptural pieces, and create stories about what these things represent.
This will be my 22nd year of teaching in Tennessee, and I never run out of ideas for lessons or cool things to try. I love experimenting with lots of different materials like paint, and wax, and clay, and metal, and even making hand made paper! For the last few years, I have really enjoyed making books with different kinds of binding techniques and papers. In my classroom, we learn about all kinds of art from foundations of drawing to weaving, clay, paper quilling, jewelry making and more! Currently, I am teaching some amazing artists from grades pre-k through 5th, and before that I was teaching A.P classes at the Creative and Performing Arts High School here in Memphis. This will be my 22nd year as an art educator, and I believe I have the best job in the world! It gives me great satisfaction to inspire young artists to be their most creative self.
As a teacher, I am also a continual learner. Having completed my Master's Degree, I now write grants to travel to places like Japan, Mexico, and all across the United States, and pursue my love of learning about new people and cultures.
I can't wait to get started, and I look forward to working with you in the studio!
