Every week young bug lovers will have the opportunity to meet friends and learn about a new insect. I am an entomologist and I love fostering the love of insects in students, or entomologists in-training. When discussing a new insect we will focus on the environment it lives in, what it eats, where it lives, its lifecycle, and many other fun facts. Students will have the opportunity to share stories and discuss how they have interacted with this insect in their lives. Learners will be encouraged to draw a picture of the insect and nature journal about what we learned. The list of insects can be found below. This list may be subject to change. If a student would like to request a certain insect, I am okay with pushing the schedule off a week to talk about an insect that is of special interest to the students.

Hi Ladies and Gents!

I am an entomologist and love teaching classes on insects and biology-related topics. I also love science experiments and getting outside! If you are a boy scout or a girl scout troop, I even teach the bug badges!

I have been teaching about insects for the last 11 years and loving it. I graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Entomology in 2013. I was Director of Education at the Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion where I created hundreds of educational programs for all ages. I recently resigned my position. I took a 4 week road trip across the country from Michigan to Arizona collecting insects, reading literature, drawing, and exploring the country. I enjoy the quick line sketches on simple whiteboard videos, but those are nothing compared to sitting down and analyzing an insect to sketch as realistic as possible. I am teaching a scientific illustration class that you can sign up for or request a new time!

I believe that it is important for students to get their hands dirty growing up. I try to bring a new interactive piece to each of my classes. Students love watching me zoom around the world on my green screen. I also have a microscope camera that we can use to see insects UP CLOSE. Let's do some citizen science together!!

I have always loved insects. People ask me, when did this start? Well, I remember learning how to read while flipping through an insect field guide. I was 7 when I told the teacher I was going to be an "insectologist". The rest is history. I have reared insects in a business setting, I have reared insects for education, I did research on an invasive stink bug, and what I love is teaching students. Now, to share my love of science and insects with the world.
