This class is for students who have no background or very little background in Chinese. There is no prior knowledge needed for this class. This is NOT a Chinese immersion class. Students will be able to sing some Chinese songs, write some Chinese characters, and can ask others what they like and dislike. Students are encouraged to complete a family tree project to share in class to apply what they have learned. There are a variety of games we will play in class to help your child learn Chinese in an interactive and fun way. Please note we will not be playing Mario in class, but rather this class has a Mario theme to aid in learning Chinese. I will provide worksheets, practice games, and review material for this class. Students will be learning Chinese words through music and games. Students will be able to have a conversation on greetings, numbers, everyday activities, family members, and pets. They can ask others what they like and dislike. I will be teaching language patterns, making simple phrases, correcting their pronunciation and tones. 1. This is a flexible class, which means no live meetings will take place. Your learner will receive pre-recorded video lessons, which you can watch and review at any point during the week. There will be interactive-style video recordings given out per week by the instructor based on multiple intelligences. Students will also receive worksheets exercises, Quizlet flashcards, and interactive practice games links throughout our lesson. Interactive practice games include matching games, Whack a mole, guess the words game and etc. 2. Students will also have the opportunity to chat with their peers and post their worksheets and a recording of their speaking practice in the classroom. Students are encouraged to complete a project to share in class to apply what they have learned. 3. Students should be prepared to verbally interact with the video. After watching the video, students are required to complete the worksheets and send a recording of their speaking practice back. They can also use the practice games I share in class each week to reinforce the mastery of the vocabulary words and making sentences. This is best accomplished with a parent and/or adult for support. 4. Students are required to post a recording each week of a weekly cumulative activity to share their progress with their peers and teacher. There will be assignments examples, and learners are required to share their presentations or songs. Worksheets and speaking practice activities will be provided each class with supporting instructions to help parents facilitate student learning. Hello and Nihao, I'm Rita Plouffe, known to my students as Ping laoshi. Bringing a wealth of experience as a Chinese educator, I have a proven track record across all levels of education. My expertise encompasses translation, effective communication, and the art of teaching Chinese as a second language, backed by a Master's degree in teaching from Brandeis University.
My teaching philosophy revolves around student-centered learning, immersing students in the language through the rich tapestry of Chinese culture, and exploring facets such as art, history, and food. I am eager to impart my unique methods, which involve making the learning experience enjoyable through activities, play, and contextual association.
Over the past decade, I have contributed to various educational institutions, instructing students from kindergarten to adults. As a certified teacher, I have valuable experience in a Chinese immersion school. Throughout my career, I have successfully taught Chinese I, II, III, IV, and AP, with many students excelling in their HSK and AP exams.
I believe in making learning exciting and enjoyable for my students, by offering a variety of classes. Currently, I provide Chinese with games and music classes, 1-on-1 tutoring, private 1:2 tutoring, and a flexible schedule class.
In my small group classes, I personally design the curriculum and create materials, including worksheets and games. Through interactive activities, your child will learn Chinese in a dynamic and enjoyable environment. With small class sizes, students have ample opportunities to share and practice with me and their peers. I'm excited to welcome you to my class!
