The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are very simple but important components of the National Core Art Standards.
In this semester class, students will analyze one principle of design each week (pattern/repetition, balance, emphasis, rhythm, harmony, variety and movement), and create a work of art that incorporates or emphasizes that principle.

Amount and type of homework will be based on individual choices and time needed to complete each work of art prior to the next class.
During each subsequent class, we will share our creations, then discuss and develop ideas for artwork that will feature the next principle of design.

My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows.

My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time!

At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is.
More detailed information regarding this class can be found in the syllabus.

Completion of the weeks' individual drawings and research papers will be celebrated at the end of class!
