 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Principles of Design; Element of Pattern/Repetition
Introductions, explanation of class expectations, introduction of the Principles of Design, and first concept: Pattern/Repetition. Students will sketch a few different types of patterns and choose a drawing, painting, photography, or other media-based assignment based on pattern, to be completed by the next class session.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Element of Balance
Students will learn about symmetrical vs asymmetrical balance, and will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on either symmetrical or asymmetrical balance OR BOTH (bonus points!), to be completed by the next class session.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Element of Emphasis
Students will analyze different examples of emphasis in art and draw examples. We will also examine warm, cool, complementary and analogous colors. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on emphasis, to be completed by the next class session.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Element of Rhythm
Students will compare/contrast the meaning of rhythm in music and how it can be applied visually, drawing ideas in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on rhythm, to be completed by the next class session.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Element of Harmony
Students will practice using shapes and colors that harmonize vs shapes and colors that do not. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on harmony, to be completed by the next class session.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Element of Variety
Students will consider what variety might look like in a work of art, and draw representations in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on variety, to be completed by the next class session.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Element of Movement
Students will brainstorm ways in which movement can be depicted in art, and draw examples in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on movement, to be completed by the final class session.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Finishing All Assignments; reflection
Students will use this time to finish any incomplete assignments, turn in, and reflect on class. Which assignment was the favorite? Least favorite? Easiest, most difficult? Why?
I am a licensed, veteran art teacher with over 20 years' experience teaching the principles of design. Over the years, I've found and developed fun and interesting art projects and processes to help kids learn and remember what they are and why they are important to the artistic process.

Pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener crayons, colored pencils markers (Crayola or Target brand) both regular and fineline if possible. Crayola goes on sale for $1/box, and Target brand might go on sale for .50/box. LOTS of paper! Sketchbook and/or printer paper for practice good quality drawing paper (Canson or Strathmore tablets are great) in 9X12 or 11X14. These are often on sale at Michael's) EITHER Bristol Board OR watercolor paper (tablets, similar to drawing paper described above, same size) watercolor paint--Crayola or Prang is best. These sometimes go on sale as well before school starts black Sharpies--fine point (regular size sharpie) and ultra-fine point digital camera or phone camera (optional!)
