In this semester class, students will analyze one principle of design each week (pattern/repetition, balance, emphasis, rhythm, harmony, variety and movement), and create a work of art that incorporates or emphasizes that principle. We will also examine warm, cool, complementary and analogous colors. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on emphasis, to be completed by the next class session.Week 4Lesson 4Element of RhythmStudents will compare/contrast the meaning of rhythm in music and how it can be applied visually, drawing ideas in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on rhythm, to be completed by the next class session.Week 5Lesson 5Element of HarmonyStudents will practice using shapes and colors that harmonize vs shapes and colors that do not. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on harmony, to be completed by the next class session.Week 6Lesson 6Element of VarietyStudents will consider what variety might look like in a work of art, and draw representations in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on variety, to be completed by the next class session.Week 7Lesson 7Element of MovementStudents will brainstorm ways in which movement can be depicted in art, and draw examples in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on movement, to be completed by the final class session.Week 8Lesson 8Finishing All Assignments; reflectionStudents will use this time to finish any incomplete assignments, turn in, and reflect on class. Which assignment was the favorite? Least favorite? Easiest, most difficult? Why?
I am a licensed, veteran art teacher with over 20 years' experience teaching the principles of design. Over the years, I've found and developed fun and interesting art projects and processes to help kids learn and remember what they are and why they are important to the artistic process.
