Growing up, the Little House on the Prairie series was one of my favorites! In fact, the books I use in class still have the inscription from my grandparents when I received them in 1990 as a birthday present! As I was teaching them in an English unit to my daughter, who is homeschooled, I wanted to also bring that opportunity to the students of Outschool to experience this amazing series of books. It was a book that I had my fifth and sixth grade English students read and a one-on-one book that my reading students read when I tutored in reading after school.
Students will need to have a physical or digital copy of the following books by Laura Ingalls Wilder: Class 1- Little House in the Big Woods Class 2- Farmer Boy Class 3-Little House on the Prairie Class 4- On the Banks of Plum Creek Class 5- By the Shores of Silver Lake Class 6- The Long Winter Class 7- Little Town on the Prairie Class 8- These Happy Golden Years Class 9- The First Four Years

This series of books are set in the late 1800's and early 1900's and do depict the narrator discuss themes common for that time period..... hunting, raising animals for food, historical perspective (racism) on Native Americans, and religious mentions (Christmas, reading the Bible, Sabbath on Sundays). The Ingalls were part of a wave of illegal settlers who entered established indigenous territories in the 1860's. During these sections of the book, the class will discuss how Laura felt as a child during this time and the fears her family had. Students will also be asked to consider the perspective of the Native Americans. How would they feel if uninvited strangers entered their home? We will discuss the Homestead Act of 1862 and how our culture of Native Americans has changed. In they books, we see Pa and Ma's attitudes towards "Indians" change as they live beside them. We will discuss whether this racism continues today and how our perspective has changed in the 21st century. This will be used as a platform to to examine the history of the 1860s as pioneers traveled west. Critical thinking will be encouraged.
