Welcome to Learn About the Artists Elementary Drawing! I am so happy that you have joined me! In this Mini-Course students will learn about nine influential artists: Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell, Michelangelo, John James Audubon, Marry Cassatt, Amadeo Modigliani, Andy Warhol, and Rembrandt van Rijn. [Please note: Private lessons are available for this class. Please see the link below following the course summary.] Each week a new artist will be introduced, followed by a drawing lesson in which students will draw and color a rendition of the artist's most important painting. The lesson will be followed by a short story to compliment the artist. Each lesson will also be supplemented with engaging interactive experiences. At the end of each lesson students can upload a picture of their completed drawings for teacher comment. Students will also have a chance to comment on each other’s drawings. Students will also have a chance to complete optional individual art projects at home to supplement the class. Projects can be shared with other students in the classroom. Students may comment on each other’s work. Week1: Frida Kahlo During this class students will have a brief introduction to the artist, Frida Kahol. We will draw and color one of her most famous paintings “Self Portrait.” Your child will be astonished by the bright and bold colors that Frida Kahol used to make her grand and radical portraits, but also the sense of commitment she had to the people of her native country, Mexico! They will discover that they too can create a beautiful portrait and follow in the footsteps of this “Female Mexican artist!” It is my hope that I can instill a love for drawing as well as a sense of confidence in your young learner! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing for teacher and student comment. 2. Create a painting that expresses your national family heritage, take a picture of your painting, and upload it to the classroom for teacher Comment. Students will have the opportunity to comment on each other’s paintings. Week2: Norman Rockwell During this class students will have a brief introduction to the artist, Norman Rockwell. We will draw and color one of his famous illustrations called “The Spooners!” We will look at why this artist was so well loved by most everyday Americans! He provided rich illustrations about common daily life! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing to the classroom for teacher and student comment. 2. Using pencil sketch your favorite summer activity! Express what is most important as you relax in your activity! Post a photo of your drawing to the classroom. Students will have a chance to comment on each other’s work! Week 3: Michelangelo During this class students will learn about Michelangelo. We will draw a portrait of one of his most famous sculptures, “David.” The first half of class students will develop a drawing in five progressive steps. They will learn that drawings can also be broken down into five basic shapes. During the second half of class, students will learn basic coloring techniques. Your child will be astonished by the sense of innocence and calm they can create through the drawing! Michelangelo was a master sculptor with strength in human anatomy. He studied anatomy with medical students. His classwork allowed him to capture the extraordinary anatomical features in both his paintings and sculptures! It is my hope that I can instill a love for drawing as well as a sense of confidence in your young learner! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing for teacher and student comment. Create your own unique sculpture using household items. Week 4: John James Audubon During this class students will have a brief introduction to the artist, John James Audubon and learn about his classic art form of drawing the birds of North America! This will be followed by a drawing lesson in which students will draw and color one of Audubon’s famous drawings of a “Cedar Waxwing” Audubon used extraordinary techniques to capture his birds in realistic active poses! He also used a lot of bright bold colors to bring his birds to life! Your child will be astonished by the many details they draw to create a precise drawing! Never again will they look at birds in the same way! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing for teacher and student comment. 2. Draw a picture of your favorite backyard bird. Use watercolors or colored pencils to create your drawing. Take a picture of your work and share it in the classroom for the teacher’s comment. Students will have a chance to comment on fellow learners' artwork. Week 5: Mary Cassatt During this class students will have a brief introduction to the artist, Mary Cassatt. They will draw one of her famous paintings called “Children Playing on the Beach.” They will understand how Mary used color and shadow to create her beautiful portraits! During the first half of class students will develop the drawing in five progressive steps. They will learn that drawings can also be broken down into five basic shapes. Mary Cassatt enjoyed painting portraits of women with their children. She achieved a unique l softness in all her paintings consistent with the Impressionism-style painting of her day! Your child will be inspired by her unique talent and the everyday scenes she portrayed. Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing for teacher and student comment. 2. Tell a picture story about your favorite time at the beach. Upload a picture of your drawing. Week 6: Amadeo Modigliani During this class students will have a brief introduction to the artist, Amadeo Modigliani. We will draw and color one of his famous paintings “Woman with Black Hat.” Your child will be astonished by the bright and bold colors that Modigliani used to make his unusual long-necked portraits. Modigliani was inspired by the art movement known as “Mannerism” in 16th century Italy. They will discover that they too can create a beautiful portrait and follow in the footsteps of this “Outstanding Italian artist! It is my hope that I can instill a love for drawing as well as a sense of confidence in your young learner! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing for teacher and student comment. 2. Create a self-portrait in the style of Modigliani. Share your drawing with the class. Students will have the opportunity to comment on each other’s drawings. Week 7: Andy Warhol During this class students will have a brief introduction to the artist, Andy Warhol. We will draw and color Pop Art Figurines representing various famous artists. We will look at why this artist was so well loved by Americans in the Pop Art culture! Andy Warhol took common, everyday American items and turned them into unique art! Your child will never look at a can of Cambell’s Soup in the same way! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing to the classroom for teacher and student comment. 2. Using pencil sketch your favorite popular toy or food. Express what is most important as you relax in your activity! Post a photo of your drawing to the classroom. Students will have a chance to comment on each other’s work! Week 8: Rembrandt Van Rijn During this class students will be introduced to the artist, Rembrandt. We will draw his famous painting “Storm on the Sea of Galilee.” Your child will discover why this artist became the most famous European portrait artist in history! Optional Interactive activities: 1. Submit a picture of your completed drawing to the classroom. Search the web to find a Rembrandt painting that you think is the best and why. Upload a picture of it to the classroom to share. This art class is full of engagement. Students will: * Post weekly a completed drawing of their class artwork * Enjoy and share theme-based projects with classmates * Have an opportunity to praise and comment on fellow learners’ artwork Best in creativity.
