This introduction to music theory course is perfect for students who are just starting to play music, are struggling to read music, or interested in learning more about how music is written. No prior musical experience is needed. Lessons will be presented using a piano keyboard as reference, however students do not need to know how to play to complete the class. Each unit will include listening/ear training activities, as well as an assessment given through Nearpod.

Week 1Lesson 1Staff, Clefs, and PitchWe'll discuss what makes up a staff, how clefs are used, and how where notes are placed on the staff affect pitch Activities: Interactive Nearpod video with intermittent multiple choice and open ended questions. Nearpod review activities for students to practice drawing the clefs and note reading practice.Week 2Lesson 2Note Values, Measures, and Time SignaturesWe'll discuss how different note values affect rhythm, what makes up a measure, and how time signatures affect rhythm Activities: Interactive Nearpod video with intermittent multiple choice and open ended questions. Nearpod review activities for students to practice drawing notes and rests, matching activities, and a Nearpod collaborate board where students can post their own rhythms.Week 3Lesson 3Time Signatures and Note Values ContinuedWe'll continue looking at time signatures, adding in 2/4 and 3/4 time. We'll also look at the difference between ties and slurs. Activities: Interactive Nearpod video with intermittent multiple choice and open ended questions. Nearpod review activities for students to practice adding bar lines to music, and a quiz to review note values and rests.Week 4Lesson 4Note Values ContinuedWe'll introduce Eighth Note and Dotted Quarter note rhythms. We'll also take a look at repeat signs. Activities: Interactive Nearpod video with intermittent multiple choice and open ended questions. Nearpod review activities for students to practice matching musical symbols to their definition, and a quiz to review note values and rests. Nearpod collaborate board where students can post their own music using what we've learned so far.Week 5Lesson 5Dynamics, Tempo Marks, and ArticulationsWe'll take a look at basic dynamic, tempo, and articulation marks students might encounter in music. We'll also listen to music clips together and discuss how changes in dynamics, tempo, and articulation impact the character and mood of the music. Activities: Interactive Nearpod video with intermittent multiple choice and open ended questions. Nearpod review activities for students including open ended questions, matching exercises, and a multiple choice quiz.Week 6Lesson 6Flats, Sharps, and NaturalsIn our final class, we'll look at how flats, sharps, and naturals affect notes. We'll also take a look at whole steps and half steps. Activities: Interactive Nearpod video with intermittent multiple choice and open ended questions. Nearpod review activities for students to practice working out whole steps and half steps.

Assessments in this class can be used as formally or informally as students would like. Interactive questions asked throughout the lesson videos allow students to gauge their understanding of the material. The summary exercises at the end of each lesson allow students to use the information they've learned.成績が提供されます
Grades are offered by request at the completion of the class. Students should have completed all summary exercises before requesting a grade. Nearpod reports can also be generated for students at their request.
While all course content will be provided in class, students may want to also have a copy of Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory Complete so they can follow along and have more written practice. Homework assignments will be given through Nearpod for students to complete.
