Beginner Level
This 8-week course introduces high school students to the cutting-edge world of Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI agents through hands-on Python programming. Meeting just one hour per week, students will progress from understanding the foundations of AI to creating their own intelligent agent applications that can perform tasks, integrate with external services, and maintain conversations. Each session combines concise instruction with interactive coding exercises, ensuring students gain practical skills they can immediately apply. Perfect for tech-savvy teens interested in the future of artificial intelligence, this course bridges theoretical knowledge with real-world programming skills that are increasingly valuable in today's job market. Students will learn how to interact with the same AI technologies powering innovations across industries, from crafting effective prompts to building automated systems that can assist with specific tasks. By the end of the course, participants will have developed a portfolio-worthy AI agent project that demonstrates their ability to work with some of the most transformative technologies of our time. Course Highlights -Learn to interact with advanced Large Language Models through Python programming -Master prompt engineering techniques to get optimal results from AI systems -Develop AI agents that can perform specific tasks and interact with external services -Gain hands-on experience with industry-standard APIs and technologies -Create structured programs that maintain context over multi-turn conversations -Understand how to debug, test, and improve AI applications. Build a foundation for future -careers in AI, machine learning, and software development Student Projects -Simple LLM Client: A Python application that connects to an LLM API and processes responses -Prompt Engineering Toolkit: A program implementing various prompting techniques with performance comparison -Advanced Prompt Engineering Tool: An application that maintains context across conversations and produces structured outputs -Weather Information Agent: A basic AI agent that retrieves and presents weather data from external APIs -Study Assistant Agent: A comprehensive final project that helps students organize notes, create flashcards, and generate study guides based on educational materials -Personal Task Manager: An agent that helps track to-do items, schedule events, and send reminders -Custom AI Agent: A self-designed agent that solves a specific problem chosen by the student
Learning Goals
Students will build practical Python applications with Large Language Models by mastering API interactions and effective prompt design.
Students will develop prompt engineering skills to control AI outputs and implement techniques for structured, contextual responses.
Syllabus
8 Lessons
over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to AI and Large Language Models
This session introduces fundamental AI concepts and explores how large language models work. Students will learn about the capabilities and limitations of LLMs while gaining hands-on experience with basic prompts through an interactive demonstration.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Python Basics for LLM Applications
Students will review essential Python programming concepts with a focus on text processing techniques relevant to LLM applications. The class includes setting up development environments in Google Colab and practicing string manipulation techniques that will be crucial for effective prompt design.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Introduction to APIs and Making Your First API Call
This class covers API fundamentals and demonstrates how to interact with LLM services programmatically using Python. Students will make their first API calls to an LLM service, learn to handle responses, and understand the key parameters that control generation behavior.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Prompt Engineering Fundamentals
Students will learn core prompt engineering techniques to improve LLM outputs through deliberate prompt design. The class explores zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought prompting while providing strategies to evaluate and compare prompt effectiveness.

***Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and specifically generative AI technologies that will be used for parts of this course can produce a variety of outputs. Sometimes these outputs may be inappropriate, offensive, or biased in a variety of ways. This is possible while learners are using these technologies during class and also outside of class. There will be a class dedicated to how these issues occur with AI and machine learning projects. Then what steps can be taken to reduce the possibility this happens.****
Learners will utilize Anthropic Claude or the ChatGPT interface to learn more about prompt engineering and large language models. An Open AI account is required for the use of the Open AI API which will be used in this class and it is required that adults help their learner register. Learners must be 13 or over to participate in this class.
Pre-Requisites
This isn't a beginner coding course. Learners should already be comfortable with basic programming concepts in any language (Python, Java, JavaScript, C/C++). If students are new to coding, check out our All About Python Level 1 class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Mount St. Mary's University
Over 5,000 students from nearly 100 countries across a variety of platforms have started coding in one of my classes. I offer classes covering the foundations of Python and AI. Before teaching, I worked as a software developer for nearly 10 years. I've worked for organizations including Apple, Dell, and Best Buy. I believe the best way to learn is by doing and all my classes are based around hands-on projects that progressively build in difficulty. I'm a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I can't wait to meet your learner in the class and get started soon.
