In this four-week "Influential Women in STEM" course, students will learn about eight different women in the STEM field (science, technology, engineering, and math) and how they influenced/changed the modern world!

Each class meeting will be structured like this:
I will introduce a woman who influenced the field of STEM in a significant way. We will then discuss her/their field, her/their contribution, and how she/they impacted the world we see today. I will share my screen throughout class, as we will be looking at pictures online (of these women) and watching Outschool-approved videos about these amazing women!

•Week One:
↝Ellen Ochoa: Former Director of the Johnson Space Center and the first Hispanic woman to go to space.
↝Edith Clarke: The first woman to be professionally employed as an electrical engineer (in the U.S.); invented the graphical calculator.
•Week Two:
↝Barbara McClintock: American scientist and cytogeneticist; was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine.
↝Katherine Johnson: American mathematician; first black female engineer at NASA; helped NASA to safely send astronauts to the moon and back.
•Week Three:
↝Rosalind Franklin: British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, etc.
↝Cecilia Payne: British-born American astronomer and astrophysicist who, in her 1925 doctoral thesis, proposed that stars were were made primarily of hydrogen and helium.
•Week Four:
↝Grace Hopper: American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral; was a pioneer of computer programming who invented one of the first linkers.
↝Chien-Shiung Wu: Chinese-American particle and experimental physicist who made significant contributions in the fields of nuclear and particle physics; worked on the Manhattan Project.

This class provides a fun environment where your learners will feel comfortable and excited to interact (with not only myself, but with other learners as well)!

No prior knowledge is needed for this class.

I like to describe my teaching style as "have fun while learning." It's important to stay focused and on task, but if a student gets bored, they won't learn or remember as much as a student who is being challenged and having fun. I am very friendly and fun, and I smile all the time! I guarantee your learner will leave class with a newfound excitement about STEM!

I hope to meet your learner in this class! Please message me with any questions or concerns. -Miss Lyndsay

Hello, I’m Miss Lyndsay!

I’m a teacher and tutor with 18+ years of experience. I taught in a brick-and-mortar classroom (both typical education and special education) for several years, as well as tutoring for 15+ years. I have since shifted to online teaching and tutoring. I specialize in math, science, and language arts, but enjoy teaching all subjects! I generally work with learners between the ages of 3 and 15.

I received a Bachelor of Arts (Cum Laude) in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Cleveland State University (Cleveland, Ohio) in 2011. *It was through this that I received formal education specific to children with autism, ADHD, and mood conditions.

I received an Associate of Arts (Journalism) from Lorain County Community College (Elyria, Ohio) in 2007.

I was a paraprofessional for the Elyria City School District (Elyria, Ohio) before becoming an academic tutor. I’ve tutored in Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, in addition to students throughout multiple countries.

---

My philosophy of teaching is to have fun while learning! If my learners are bored, they will struggle with retaining the information. By adding a little (structured) fun, learners can better remember the material. I always use positive reinforcement and encourage my learners!

Two fun things about me: I can juggle (I’ll show you!) and I have an apricot toy poodle named Archie (you might see him sometimes, he’s pretty cute).

---

Note: I still teach classes even if only one learner is enrolled. I do not cancel due to low enrollments.

I look forward to meeting and teaching your child/children; thank you for considering me!
