Black girls and women have long been the driving force behind nearly every Black freedom movement that has shaped the world, yet their contributions are often erased, overlooked, or minimized. Their voices, ideas, and labor—so central to resisting misogynoir, capitalism, and systemic racism—are frequently left out of pop culture narratives and academia's feminist memory. This course is designed to break that silence, centering Black girls as movement-builders, culture-makers, and political thinkers.

Over the next few weeks, we will gather as a community to uplift the legacies of Black girls and women who have transformed the fight for justice. We will examine their organizing strategies, literature, cultural production, movement-building, policy reform, and mobilization, always keeping Black girlhood at the center of our discussions.

With the guidance of the course instructor, young scholars will explore the works and activism of Black feminists, African feminists, and womanists across the African Diaspora. We will read canonical anthologies, books, articles, and digital media, engaging with both historical and contemporary voices to understand how Black feminism has evolved. This course will also highlight various iterations of Black feminism, including Hood Feminism, Hip-Hop Feminism, and Trap Feminism—modern movements that address the limitations of mainstream feminism and uplift the unique experiences of Black girls and women.

• Black Girlhood as a Political & Cultural Force – How young Black girls have shaped social movements
• Sexuality, Gender, and Class – How these intersections impact Black girls’ lived experiences
• Reproductive Justice & Health – Centering the specific needs of Black girls in feminist discourse
• Media & Digital Activism – How Black girls use social media, music, and pop culture as tools of resistance
• Black Feminist Joy & Liberation – Imagining futures where Black girls thrive in spaces of freedom and creativity

Throughout this journey, students will be encouraged to reflect, write, and create, using a course journal (provided in PDF format) to document their learning, insights, and personal experiences. This course is not just about studying Black feminism—it’s about living it, applying it, and recognizing its power in our everyday lives as Black girls and young women.

This is a space for young Black girls to see themselves, their stories, and their futures reflected in the movements that have always fought for their freedom.
