Class Experience: 

In this self-paced class learners will have a pre-recorded video where they can follow along to understand how to create an illuminated letter at their own pace. Learners will be learning how to create illuminated letters with gold watercolor. 

What is illumination? In the past, illuminated letters were added to the pages of manuscripts. Illumination comes from the term to fill with light. Illuminated letters were made by applying gold leaf to letters and images. The gold leaf would reflect light and gives the appearance of glowing. It took great skill to create such artistic pieces. Without the skills of these people who made manuscripts many of these rare manuscripts wouldn’t have been made and these important times in history may have been lost. Here is a great way to create an Illuminated Letter using gold watercolor instead. 

Creating Your Illuminated Letter: 
You will be able to follow along with me by drawing your chosen letter while I draw a letter. Next you will see how to draw a simple rose or you may draw a flower of your choice. I will help learners learn how to use gold watercolor to illuminate their letter. Learners may pause the video at any time while they work on their illuminated letter with me during the pre-recorded video. This way learners may work at their own pace and enjoy working on their illuminated letter with me step by step. I give guidance during the video to help learners achieve creating an illuminated letter. 

At the beginning of the video I will briefly discuss the history of illuminated letters and then I will briefly go over the supplies needed. Next, I give a few quick tips to help learners achieve creating their illuminated letter. Now, to express our creativity, we will  begin working on an illuminated letter for the rest of the video. In the syllabus I give a break down of what is covered in the class by giving specific times of what part of the video is at specific times. 

The illuminated letter I create on the video will be the letter C with a simple rose. I will use color pencils to color the rose and gold watercolor to create the illuminated part of the letter. 

This self-paced class is a pre-recorded 39.12 minute video. A PDF will be included with 26 letters in the English alphabet, which have been drawn by hand. Then, I scanned them into my computer to help learners know how to draw different letters to be able to create illuminated letters or learners may draw these letters for learners own personal use to create these illuminated letters. (It's helpful to see how to add areas in letters in order to apply gold watercolor to different letters). Two Letter Template PDFs are included: US Document Print Size and A4 Print Size. There is a Third PDF that goes into the specific supplies that are recommend for best results and a few quick tips. 

If the learner pauses the pre-recorded video as they work on their letter they may be able to finish their illuminated letter this way (perhaps taking 1 hour to 1.5 hours total). Depending on how quickly a learner works on their illuminated letter they may have to finish their illuminated letter after the video has ended.

I briefly go over the supplies needed, which is just an additional variety of pens to help create the variety of different dots on this Illuminated Letter.
