In this one time class, learners will listen to a fiction story called Huff and Puff on Groundhog Day by Jean Warren and Illustrated by Molly Piper. In the non fiction portion of class, learners will research and discuss other animals that live underground like the groundhog. Their words will be added to a chart labeled Groundhogs can/are/have. The learners will then create a step by step drawing of a groundhog together with the teacher, complete with non fiction labels. If the learners feel comfortable, they will share their work with other students. When the class is complete, the learners will have an all about groundhog project to hang up for all to admire!

Hi! Welcome to my Outschool classroom.
My name is Betty Nilssen. 💕
I have a BS in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from UW-Milwaukee. I am a first grade teacher, but I have also taught second, third and fourth grade, full inclusive classrooms. My teaching license certifies me to teach grades 1~6. My passion for teaching reading while incorporating phonics, phonemic awareness, rhyming, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, science, social studies, math, drawing and writing helps children strengthen their academic skills while they gain academic confidence and a love of learning. Teaching reading is my super power. I can support your young learner.
I have three adult daughters and two of them are teachers. My mom was also an educator.
There are so many books to read, words and sentences to write, math equations to solve and fiction and non fiction pictures to draw and label. Let's get started!
