There are no live meetings. All interactions between students and the teacher will happen on the class page. This class will be presented via powerpoint and pre-recorded drawing instruction. Students will upload images of their assignments for the teacher to see and comment on. This is particularly important if a final grade is required for homeschool or charter school credit. Why Self-Paced? *MY Self-Paced classes ALWAYS cost less than the live versions of the same class! *Self-Paced classes are an excellent choice for families with busy schedules. *Content is exactly the same as live classes, at a lower fee. *Students can work at an independent pace. *Self-Paced classes are fantastic for international students whose time zone doesn't match the teacher's (US Mountain Time), *Self-Paced classes are a great alternative for students who are uncomfortable with live video chat. ***Special note to parents: This is a secular class that introduces students to a CULTURAL celebration. Religion may be mentioned in a historical context to assist with understanding, but is NOT the focus of the content of this class.*** This class aligns with the National Visual Arts Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding. Enduring Understanding: People develop ideas and understandings of society, culture, and history through their interactions with and analysis of art. You can find the NVA standards here: https://www.nationalartsstandards.org/ The celebration of El Dia de Los Muertos has a significant historical impact on Western culture: it is the result of a blending of two cultures, and the subsequent expansion into others. The Spanish Conquistadors, upon entering Mexico in the 1500's, blended their celebration of All Souls with the Aztec custom of celebrating their ancestors, with depictions of skeletons and skulls. This celebration has spread throughout Latin America and into North America over the past 500 years, and most recently, has been depicted in movies and cartoons. This class is intended to foster cultural sensitivity, connectivity, and acceptance by comparing and contrasting El Dia de Los Muertos with similar customs celebrated in other countries, such as the Qingming Festival in Malaysia, and North American custom of celebrating Halloween, with its roots in Western Europe. Understanding that traditions from historically diverse cultures are fundamentally the same helps children make cross-cultural connections. Our Self-Paced format will be as follows: Content: Video demonstration of the process will be posted. Videos will vary in length depending on the type of art being presented. Some may be as short as 10 or 15 minutes while others could be ½ hour or more. Student work is expected to take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending upon the student’s preferred pace. Drawing Assignments: Students spend time completing their artwork and submit it via the classroom. Submit Assignment: Students are required to post photos of their completed artwork in the classroom on the designated post. Keep in mind, uploading artwork for the teacher to see is important for assessment and feedback. Detailed information regarding the content of each session can be found in the syllabus. Through the guided drawing process, students will learn how to use simple lines and shapes to create fun symbols of celebration for Dia de los Muertos.

As a 30+ year, veteran art educator, I have had the privilege of teaching in some of the most diverse schools in my county.
I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
In addition to simplifying the process, I have extensive training and leadership experience in researching and writing standards and developing curriculum that is aligned to both local and national standards, as well as teaching to those standards. This includes National Visual Art Anchor Standard 11 as described in the class description.
