Chess Camp: The Checkmate Series

This class is for those looking to master basic end game strategy at the beginner's level. I recommend learners play at least 25 games of chess prior to signing up for this class. In this 4-day camp I will teach four different ways to get the opponent's king in checkmate. Each day we will cover a different end game fundamental. Students will need their chess boards and chess pieces. We will not set up a full board of chess in this class. I will show chess players how to notate their game, how to manage differing amounts of time, and how to articulate one's deductive process. I will teach the formalities of a real-life chess tournament and also cover sportsmanship. What this means is shaking hands with the opponent before and after a game, not making faces or discouraging/distracting body language of any kind while the opponent is deciding where to move.

Day 1- King and Queen Checkmate

Day 2- King and Rook Checkmate

Day 3- King and Bishop Checkmate

Day 4- King and Pawn Checkmate

Class Structure:
(5 min) Student introductions
(15-25 min) Lesson- I share my screen with students for the presentation and interact with them throughout the lesson, while also checking for understanding. Students actively participate during this time. The presentation is a series of pictures taken by me of each step in a chess strategy with an explanation. Students need to have their chess boards out and chess pieces in hand during this time as slides direct them to move the pieces on their own boards. If their chess boards do not have letters and numbers on them for notation, the pictures show them where to move, they can follow the pictures, otherwise I give steps (i.e. move the queen to d3, or Qd3). I cater to different levels and learning types, my hope in doing so is that all learners who join my class will have something new to take away. I also include information about chess that students may not already know.
(20-25 min) Q&A, review material, put into practice what they learned during the lesson. I will ask students for the next step in the strategy so they can show me how much they learned.

Throughout the lesson I ask students chess questions, they are welcome to answer them.

This class is for those who have played at least 25 games of chess and want to master the end game fundamental. The end game fundamental is when you get to the end of a game and need to win. If your chess player is finding that their games often end in stalemate then that is key sign they are weak in the end game. When there are only a few pieces left at the end of a game some players just kind of give up or end the game without getting a proper checkmate. In this class I teach the most basic mates, which are essential to learning chess and ending the game properly with a win by checkmate. A class for chess lovers and those looking to up their end game strategy. If you have any questions please feel free to email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I look forward to meeting you soon. Thank you so much!

*Note: If I have not scheduled a class at a time that works for you, please feel free to click on alternative times to request a time/day that fits your schedule, or email me directly and I would be more than happy to set up a class for you. I look forward to having your learner in my class. Thank you.

I enjoy playing and teaching chess and inspiring a passion within children to learn. I learned to play as a very young child and believe chess teaches children pertinent problem-solving strategies that help them throughout their lives. The ability to think one's way out of a problem is an essential life skill. Studies show that children who learn chess do better academically, so the science behind the learning is there. I taught chess to elementary-level students at different schools as part of their after-school program. I taught chess strategies, tactics, and sportsmanship to help future leaders solve problems in chess, in their classrooms, and throughout their lives.
❈ Aided in the development of problem-solving skills inside and outside of the classroom.
❈ Improved sportsmanship and success through chess.
