Once again, Detective Higdon is asking for help to "Crack This Case"! The National Anywhereville Museum has been robbed of millions of dollars of historic jewelry and authorities are confused by all of the conflicting eyewitness reports.... We have plenty of eyewitnesses who saw the thief who carried out this crime, but we have to sort through all of their statements to piece together the thief's appearance! In this one time class, students will help "Detective Higdon" investigate by...
Students will visualize and make mental images of a suspect based on details/text evidence from Eyewitness Statements. Students will draw a sketch of what the criminal looks like based on those mental images. Students will compare their sketches to several suspects in order to deduce the identity of the thief. Students will practice inferencing, deductive reasoning, and using text evidence to support ideas and opinions. Team work skills will be strengthened through this activity.
I have been a classroom teacher for 19 years. I have often utilized similar activities in my classroom in order to help students understand and practice finding detail/text evidence and making mental images/visualizing in a way that is fun and has a "real world" application.

This class is meant to be a lighthearted and fun way to practice inferencing, visualizing, and deductive thinking. There are no dark themes or mature content as related to law enforcement or criminal activity. This class is not designed to teach drawing skills nor are students expected to be perfect artists. The drawing is simply a fun way to incorporate visualization.
