Learners who struggle with reading or spelling need a structured and explicit approach to these subjects. Learning the 6 syllable types helps students determine how to spell a word based on the sounds the vowel has in each type of syllable. It also helps when reading so that students can divide a long word into its syllables and know what the vowel sounds are in each syllable. This helps students become more efficient readers & spellers, creating the strong foundation needed for spelling & reading multisyllabic and more challenging words. Please note there are no live meetings for this class. One instructional video, approximately 20 minutes in length, will be posted for each of the 6 lessons. Each video will include: 1. Syllable Review 2. A short custom-made, engaging video to present a syllable type 3. Practice reading & writing syllables with that week’s syllable type 4. Dictation of 10 words that include the syllable types learned 5. Dividing words into syllables Our first class will start with ensuring learners know what a syllable is and how to divide a word into syllables, using vocal & visual strategies. We will then learn our first syllable type and how to identify its spelling pattern. Proceeding classes will include a review of the syllable types learned before, followed by learning a new syllable type and how to read and spell it when heard in a word. All 6 syllable types will be taught: closed, open, silent-e, vowel team, r-controlled, & consonant-le. We will discover what the vowel says in each of these syllable types and why it is important when we read and spell words. Class is taught in a multi-sensory format, including visual tools to help the learner visualize what each syllable type is, short custom-made videos, and verbal, visual, & written methods to apply the syllable types to spelling words. A positive and encouraging environment will be maintained throughout our class. Learners will become more confident in their spelling and reading abilities when they are able to notice and understand syllable types. A short homework assignment will also be posted for each lesson, giving the learners a chance to practice spelling the syllable types learned in class. If submitted to the teacher, she will reply usually within 24 hours with detailed feedback, encouragement, and spelling tips to remember. A third lesson post will be interactive activities and challenges pertaining to the syllable type learned that week. These activities and challenges include: • Go on a scavenger hunt to find this week’s syllable type in what you are currently reading • Word Constructor Challenge – You will be given several syllables and be challenged to make words with them • Categorize Syllables – Put the given syllables in their correct categories • Unscramble the syllables to make a real word Students should plan to watch the videos, complete the homework, and tackle the syllable challenges each week. By completing these tasks, students will be able to practice and reinforce what was learned in the class videos. This also provides the opportunity for the teacher to gauge the student's progress and understanding. By the end of the 6-week course, students will be comfortable identifying the 6 syllable types when reading and spelling words. Class content each week is as follows: • Week One: Closed Syllable • Week Two: Open Syllable • Week Three: Vowel-Consonant-e Syllable • Week Four: Vowel Team Syllable • Week Five: r-Controlled Syllable • Week Six: Consonant-le Syllable A self-paced course allows a learner to cover the material at times convenient for them. Students are encouraged to check in with the teacher anytime during the course using the Outschool Classroom. Private messages or Classroom comments are usually responded to within 24 hours. Please make sure to have a few supplies with you when watch the class videos: • pencil & paper OR dry-erase board, marker, & eraser • something to keep track of each syllable type we learn - index cards to create flashcards OR one sheet of paper where you can list them all
