Learners who struggle with reading or spelling need a structured and explicit approach to these subjects. Learning the 6 syllable types helps students determine how to spell a word based on the sounds the vowel has in each type of syllable. It also helps when reading so that students can divide a long word into its syllables and know what the vowel sounds are in each syllable. Students will be able to identify the 6 syllable types and apply that knowledge to spelling and reading words.
Allison Woolley has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis. She has homeschooled her children from kindergarten through high school and has seen the benefit of teaching syllable types to her own children, specifically the help it gives to struggling spellers and readers. Her experience also includes tutoring English Language Arts to 2nd – 6th graders and teaching other subjects and leading groups for children in pre-K through 10th grade.

A short homework assignment will be posted each week, giving the learners a chance to practice spelling the syllable types learned in class. If submitted to the teacher, she will reply within 24 hours with feedback. Plan to spend about 10 minutes on homework.
