Looking for an online intermediate-level ballet class? Welcome to Intermediate Ballet (Ballet II)!

This class is for children who love ballet and feel that they have moved beyond introduction-level classes and are ready to take dance a bit more seriously (but don't worry, we will still have lots of fun!). In this class we will focus on proper technique, ballet terminology, strengthening our muscles, and increasing flexibility. Each week we will practice a variety of steps, some basic and some complex based on the the group. Students are welcome to take this class in conjunction with my Beginner Ballet Class or as a stand-alone weekly class. Worried that your ballet dancer isn't a good fit? Don't be--try it out! We've had students from all stages of ballet give class a try.

Students will be introduced to movements, steps, and combinations and will receive feedback/guidance for improvement. We mainly use the Vaganova style of ballet in class, but will occassionally reference the Cecchetti style. We will use music from various classical ballets including "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Giselle", "Peter and the Wolf", "Coppélia", "Carnival of the Animals", "Romeo and Juliet", "Don Quixote", "Cinderella", and more!

Class structure:
(5 minutes) Question of the Day: Each child will have the opportunity to answer a fun question
(5-10 minutes) Ballet warm-up and stretches
(15-20 minutes) Combinations/Barre
(5 minutes) Ballet Game: Ballet Simon Says, Ballet Freeze Dance, etc.
(15 minutes) Center work/steps "across the floor" (ex: balancé, turns, bourres, etc.)
(5 minutes) Closing Question, "What was your favorite part of today's class?"

Materials:
For intermediate ballet, students will need a chair with a back or portable ballet barre (to hold lightly for balance).

Attire for intermediate ballet:
-Leotard and tights or a well-fitting t-shirt with leggings, shorts, or well-fitting sweatpants
-Long hair pulled back into a bun
-Well-fitting ballet slippers

Classroom Page: I reccomend looking at the post on the classroom page 5-10 minutes before the start of class. I will post the "question of the day" before each class and your child can prepare their answer before joining to relieve any anxiety. Always take a peek at the classroom page a few minutes after class, as well. I often post tips, videos, links to music used in class, and weekly ballet "homework".

For your child to be ready for this intermediate-level ballet class they should be familiar with and able to demonstrate most of the following:
-plié
-tendu
-first, second, and third position with feet
-preparation (en bas), first, second, and fifth position with arms
-relevé
-bourrée
-pas de bourrée
-passé (turned out, knee held to side, toes pointed)
-proper ballet posture with minimal guidance
-proper ballet technique including pointing toes
-clapping and/or moving with the beat of music
-listening to and applying feedback and corrections
学習到達目標
Ballet II (Intermediate Ballet) students will:
-Improve their understanding of basic ballet stretches, as well as improve their flexibility
-Learn about and demonstrate "proper ballet technique" (ex: tall posture, working stomach muscles, pointed toes, no "sickling" of feet, etc.)
-Demonstrate an understanding of safety while dancing and stretching (ex: turning out from hips not knees)
-Build upon their existing knowledge of ballet to increase the complexity of steps
-Improve their ability to count the beats in music, notice fast vs. slow tempos, and move accordingly
-Demonstrate focus and discipline during class (ex: listening and practicing while combinations are taught)
-Cultivate a growth mindset focused on the self and not comparison to or competition with others
-Build a fun and positive community with their ballet-dance loving peers :)

Be sure that ballet students are head-to-toes on camera when standing. Students should have water, room to move, comfortable clothing, and appropriate footwear. If possible, no carpet flooring or mats. Ballet slippers preffered! Parents may want to remain close by during ballet class to encourage attention and help with any technology issues that might arise. Just remember that adults are not to be visible on-camera. If any technological issues arise during class (ex: teacher is inaudible), parents can send me a message in the chat on Zoom and I will do my best to resolve the issue. This intermediate ballet class is great for students who are neurotypical, neurodiverse, have Autism, ADHD, speech impairments, dyslexia, Down Syndrome, and many other disability classifications. If a family has any special needs, comments, or concerns before or after class they can feel free to send me a private message on Outschool and I will do my best to accommodate to your satisfaction within 48 hours. I will gladly make accomodations/modifications to help each learner. Examples of modifications/accomodations include: -Setting up a time for a short one-on-one session before their first class to prepare them -Increasing or decreasing my verbal feedback during class (ex: I can refrain from giving "negative feedback" and focus solely on positives) -Breaking down steps more for your child to work on one aspect at a time (ex: focus on arms for a step one week and feet the next) -Allowing students to have their camera off while they practice new steps Please reach out with any requests. I truly try my best to make my class as accessible as possible for students.
