このクラスで学べること

Learners will begin and learn to maintain an art practice which includes shape, line, value, color and composition using still life and photo references.
This class will focus on guiding learners to discover their own artistic style and offering many techniques to achieve the desired result rather than the usual "draw-what-I-draw" directed method.
Learners will be encouraged to learn to see in the way an artist must see in order to produce recognizable images and yet render them in their own unique style.
A Photo reference will be chosen or a still life object will be set up and lit for each meeting; alternatively, an art prompt or creative practice will be the focus for some meetings, based on the option that will most benefit the student. Students will be guided to notice general shapes as well as details, values and composition, and proper pencil, brush, and mark making techniques.
Materials and supplies needed will be communicated at the first meeting. Student will be required to have the supplies needed for the second meeting.
Sample topic schedule:
Monday, January 11: What is your art style? The question will be discussed and an art medium settled upon during this time.
Monday January 18: The basics of your medium: techniques and creative experiments for using your specific medium.
Monday January 25: Creating a piece of real art with your chosen medium.
Monday February 4: Use an art prompt to begin creating a piece of art.
Monday February 8: Participate in a creative practice to train your brain to be more creative.
I am a working artist selling art as well as having a teaching certificate. I am able to build a respectful rapport with students quickly and determine how best to encourage them in their art practice. My business experience will help me prepare the young artist by giving advice on marketing and selling their art as well.
Supplies will be dependent on the medium or mediums in which students desire to work. Sample suggestions are below, but will be discussed and finalized during the first meeting. Parents please be prepared to go shopping with or order the supplies discussed online in time for the second meeting. DO PLEASE contact me with any questions you might have before class: I may be able to calm any anxiety you are having about what is truly necessary and where to get these supplies.

A well-lit, quiet area with access to a clean flat surface to work on is absolutely non-negotiable. Messes are part of the class, so choose the area and surface protection as well as clothing during the session with this in mind.

For sketching: learners will need a good quality sketchbook, a set of pencils as discussed in the first meeting, and a kneaded eraser. More supplies may be added as the student progresses or desires.

For acrylics: learners will need a basic selection of quality acrylic paint tubes. Acceptable options will be discussed during the first meeting. A set of student-grade brushes and either canvas panels, stretched canvas, or canvas paper will be needed on which to paint. A mixed media sketchbook will allow the creation of thumbnails, experimentation with color-mixing and brush application without using up the more expensive canvas.

For pastels: learners will need a basic selection of medium quality soft pastels (not oil pastels). Options will be discussed during the first meeting. An easel, either desk or standing will be invaluable, as pastel artworks must be created at an angle perpendicular to the floor or table. Other supplies will include sanded pastel paper, a mixed media sketchbook for creating thumbnails and experimenting with pastel application.
