Ever wondered how it all came into being? The tiniest atoms from the birth of the universe to entire galaxies made up of trillions of stars. Join me for a 4-week course on a journey of exploration across the cosmos. Learn about the birth of all the mass and energy that was ever made as they formed the fifty trillion cells of the human body, to the birth of planets, stars, galaxies, and the Hubble expansion of the Universe. How might the cosmos end? Or will it? This 4-week class is Part 1 of a 3-part sequence of 4-week classes in Astronomy that can be taken in any order when offered. Part 1 covers topics in Early Astronomy, Aristotle, Modern Astronomy, Galileo, Newton, Light, Telescopes, the Birth of Stars, and the Formation of Planets. Part 2 covers topics in Latitude and longitude, Seasons, Overview of the Planets, The Moon, The Sun, and the Life and Death of Stars. Part 3 covers an in-depth study of planetary science, focusing on the properties, similarities, and differences of our neighbors in the solar system. No background knowledge is required, just an open mind. The age range for this class is only a guideline. Anyone interested in science and who can stay focused for 45 minutes can benefit. Week One: - Ancient Astronomy - Mesopotamia, Constellations, the Zodiac & the Birth of Astrology - Aristotle, Pythagoras, Ptolemy & Retrograde Motion - The Geocentric Theory Week Two: - Modern Astronomy - Copernicus & the Heliocentric Theory - Brahe, Kepler, Galileo & Newton Week Three: - Light - Telescopes - Electromagnetic Spectrum Week Four: - Origins of the Solar System - The Big Bang - The Nebula Hypothesis - Formation of the Sun & Planets

This is a lecture-style class where I do most of the talking (student questions are always encouraged and welcomed). It is not a discussion forum type of class where students spend most of the class time sharing pre-learned facts and individual opinions about science. Please keep in mind that this is a multi-day class with four meetings. There are no refunds or credits given outside of what Outschool stipulates on its website (Limited Refund Policy). In the event your learner misses a live class, all lessons are recorded and available for viewing on Outschool.

The result is a creative, interactive, and personalized approach to teaching the science of everyday phenomena that is part travelogue and part science lesson. I have 20 years of teaching experience as a professor. I hold a master's degree in the field of Condensed Matter Physics, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Physics, with a specialization in Quantum Optics and Material Science. I am a published scientific author in several international journals, and I serve as an expert scientist on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. I have traveled extensively to every continent on Earth, including all 50 States in the United States. The content of my lectures is meant to be a resource for my passion for teaching many fields of science, including Physics, Astronomy, Earth Science, Oceanography, Meteorology, Geology, and Physical Science. Anyone of any age who is curious about how our world works and our place in the Universe will be intrigued.
