What is Beast Academy? Homeschool parent guide

Beast Academy is the elementary math program from Art of Problem Solving (AoPS). It covers roughly ages 6-13 through comic-style guide books, practice books, and Beast Academy Online. The tone is playful. The problems are not.

Families often pick it when a kid finishes a standard lesson and still wants a harder puzzle, or when school math feels too slow. It is a poor fit if you need a gentle, fully scripted program with lots of parent talk-tracks. For that, Math Mammoth or Singapore Math is usually calmer.

Books and Beast Academy Online are both self-paced. Online even offers hints, which can feel like a teacher until the hint is another riddle. A kid can get unstuck on the platform and still not explain the idea at dinner. A live class is for the hour the puzzle has become a brick wall, or the week a strong math kid melts down because the comic page asked for more reading stamina than they had. Keep the books. Add people for the rescue, and sometimes for the joy of solving with other kids who like hard problems too. Beast Academy classes are built for that.

Books, online, or both

Print books (levels 1-5, with A–D units in each level) carry the comic teaching plus practice. Beast Academy Online adds interactive problems, hints, and progress tracking for many of the same levels. Some families run books only. Some run online only. A common homeschool setup is online for daily work and books when a kid wants paper.

AoPS designed this as a path into later AoPS middle and high school courses. You do not have to take that path. You can use Beast Academy as a challenge supplement next to another spine.

Challenge is the product. Frustration is the side effect if you skip placement.

A live class is for the hour the puzzle has become a brick wall, or the week your kid is strong at math and still melting down because the comic page asked for more reading stamina than they had. The teacher can keep the challenge and change the conversation. Self-paced work is still the daily muscle. Live time is the rescue, and sometimes the joy of solving with other kids who like hard problems too.

If you want that, browse Beast Academy classes or broader math classes. Keep the books. You are adding people, not dropping AoPS.

Use ESA funds or programs like OpenEd if available in your state

Books, online subscriptions, and live classes are often eligible when your program covers curriculum and online courses. Check what receipts typically clear and whether your state uses a marketplace or reimbursement. OpenEd is available only in some states, so use it if you have it, and skip it in your planning if you do not.

Beast Academy vs a standard spine

Keep a complete spine like Math Mammoth or Singapore Math if your kid still needs every grade-level skill taught in order. Use Beast Academy when puzzle thinking is the gap, not missing facts.
