Students in this class practice reading skills and strategies using high-interest articles about various animals. I'll move at a comfortable pace and offer extra support with less confident or reluctant readers in mind. Articles will include several paragraphs, but we will break them down into manageable chunks. Reading Level: It is very helpful for students to work with texts that are a good level for them. Is is OK to be a bit challenging, but not to the point of frustration. The sample text below can give you an idea of the general level of texts we work with in this class. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss whether this class is the right fit for your child. "Mexican axolotl salamanders are amphibians that spend their whole lives underwater. They exist in the wild in only one place, near Mexico City. They live in small lakes, and temporary wetlands." (adapted from the National Geographic Kids website article about Axolotls) Typical class activities include: -short interactive presentation about the animal of the day -pre-teaching vocabulary and word-attack strategies (like breaking multi-syllable words into chunks) -supported reading of the article Students will also be asked to read sections silently or out loud) -class discussion -class may include some sight word practice depending on the needs of the students Reading Strategies: Good readers apply a variety of reading strategies - often without even knowing it. This class will help your child learn to apply helpful strategies more intentionally to improve their reading including: -previewing -predicting -getting curious -using diagrams and images -taking notes -finding main ideas -using headings and more! Reading Practice: Reading speed and comprehension improve with practice. Students spend quality time reading non-fiction texts in this class. Students are also encouraged to find time for additional practice between classes.
