In this single-session class, we will explore an important building block of art, perspective, very simply! We'll start by reading the fun picture book Shrinking Mouse by Pat Hutchins - although it's a book created for a very young audience, it covers this topic in a creative and humorous way. After that, we'll look at some photos and works of art by other artists for a further discussion of how the illusion of aerial/atmospheric perspective works. We'll finish up by using paper in related colors to create simple collages of an imaginary landscape, which will show foreground, middleground, and background to create a sense of space on our papers! Please see the supply list below and make sure you have the items on hand prior to the class start. Please note: although siblings are welcome to share computers, all learners attending the class need to be enrolled.

Lista de útiles escolares
Learners will need: -Colored construction paper in at least 4 related colors - we'll use one sheet as a background color and glue on top of that. What do I mean by "related" colors? See the photo in the class listing, which uses shades of blue & green - if you can curate the color choice, it can lead to a more visually satisfying result. For example, you might choose within color families (cool colors: blues greens purples; warm colors: reds oranges yellows). Doing so, you'll get a much more cohesive result than if you choose 4 random colors. THAT SAID: I know not all colored paper packs offer tremendous variety, so no worries. Just try to pick colors that seem the most visually cohesive. -A glue stick (please make sure it's not dried out!) -Scrap paper to glue on (not newspaper - the newsprint rubs off) - eg glossy newspaper circulars or junk mail or the back of old handouts you don't need anymore -Scissors (optional - we will start by tearing paper; some students may choose to use scissors instead if they want to get more detail) -Pencil (optional - I suggest working without one, but some students may choose to use one for more detail)
