This course will follow my initial Dyslexia course for students! Students MUST have completed the first course (Yes, I Have Dyslexia. Yes I CAN Read - Part 1) prior to enrolling in this course. This will continue where students left off in part 1. This course is designed to help students with dyslexia or other reading disabilities, specifically those in PK - 1st grade. Students who struggle in the following areas of reading would benefit from this course: - difficulty breaking words into smaller parts of syllables - difficulty identifying and manipulating sounds in syllables - difficulty remembering the names of letters and recalling their corresponding sounds - difficulty decoding single words - difficulty spelling words the way they sound (phonetically) or remembering letter sequences in very common words seen often in print In this course, we will break down the phonics and phonemic awareness skills that are necessary for reading success. Some of the things that students will work on are: - rhyming words - blending phonemes (sounds) to make words - syllable recognition and manipulation - letter identification - alphabet knowledge (order of the alphabet) - letter sounds (how to correctly produce each sound as well as how to recognize each sound in print) - high frequency words - word formation and handwriting - closed syllable types - consonant sounds - short vowel sounds This class is one that requires students to print off a manual so they can follow along and work on their handwriting. Students will participate in activities that require them to write as well as activities that are oral. Many of these activities are done through listening and speaking games. I am a special education teacher and have been trained in working specifically with students with dyslexia. This course is designed to move at the pace of it's learners. We constantly practice skills so that they become second nature to students and so that students feel successful! Reading is hard. Dyslexia and other disabilities can make it even harder. My goal is to provide your child with the skills they need to become successful readers!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hi everyone!
My name is Katherine Gillott but please feel free to call me Katie. I am a certified teacher in both Texas and California. I live in the Southern California area with my husband and our 4 (yes, 4) dogs!
I teach all elementary levels and subjects (grades PK - 5), but my specialty is teaching reading. I love teaching students how to read and seeing the excitement that comes from mastering such an important life skill! I believe that no two children are alike which means that no two children learn the same way. One of my goals as an educator, is to ensure that every child, no matter what their background may be, receives a quality education. Every child is capable of learning and as a teacher it is my responsibility to make that happen, even if it requires some out of the box thinking!
I do currently work full time outside of Outschool so my class availability is currently pretty limited! If there is a certain class/section you are interested in, please do not hesitate to reach out and I will do my best to work with you to meet your needs!
