In 1579, an African-born man would be the first of his kind to step foot on the soil of mainland Japan and make history. We will learn how he caught the attention of Lord Nobunaga, the head of the most powerful clan in Japan, who made Yasuke a samurai in his court. 1. The class will begin with an explanation of what a samurai is. 2. I will conduct a PowerPoint presentation following the timeline of when, why and how Yasuke came to be a Samurai in Japan. Learners will be able to ask questions during the presentation. There may be reading material as well. 3. I will lead the class in an open discussion about what was covered in the presentation. Students will then ask questions of me as well as their fellow students. Depending on how interested the learners are, we may make Samurai helmets from construction paper. This may not happen in each class if the learners are not interested in the project.
