Tarea

1 hora por semana. Students will be assigned an individual writing task in class. Depending on how much of the writing gets completed in class, the students may need to finish as homework so they can be ready to participate on the second day.

Students will learn about Benjamin Banneker, a great inventor, and write his biography. 

Students will learn the components of a biography.

- They also will learn the elements of good writing.

 - They will learn how to do descriptive writing. 

Students will learn how to revise and have the opportunity to revise their writing.

Students will do independent writing.

Students will have the opportunity to share sections of the work, if they like.

Students will design artwork to go with their writing.

The class will be interactive starting with community-building games and vocabulary-building exercises.

Students will develop their writer’s voice.
Students will learn the mechanics of good writing, such as descriptive and figurative language.
Students will discover creative ways to express their ideas.

Students will need paper and pencils; if some students are fine using their computer only to write that is fine as well.
Students will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
Students will need a white sheet of paper (construction or computer printer paper fine).

I have taught writing to youth for over 25 years. I currently also teach college writing and facilitate writing workshops for elementary and middle school students. I have a Ph.D.  in the area of literacy, language, society, and culture from U.C. Berkeley. One of my areas of research is also Black history.
