College application essays are unlike your typical high school essays. Most students have not had much experience writing about themselves in a way that showcases their best qualities along with their writing ability. In my three years of working in admissions at an Ivy League university, I have read about two thousand college essays and supplemental statements that run the gamut from unremarkable to extraordinary. How do you write an essay that stands out?

This class for individual coaching is learner-directed; they will determine their pace and make their own decisions. I assign homework after each session tailored to the needs of the student at that time, and I expect that students will work on their essay between our meetings. Follow-up sessions offer opportunities for additional feedback, to review essay progress and homework assignments, and to ask and answer new questions. If the student is satisfied with their essay before completing all four sessions, I encourage them to use our remaining time to work on supplemental essays or short-answer questions, resumes, or writing the activity section of the application.

What you can expect from me:
- I will ask a lot of questions to better understand the student and their goals.
- I will help the student to identify the theme(s) of their essay, deepen their self-reflection, and make new connections.
- I will point out spelling and grammatical issues.
- I will offer suggestions about the organization and flow of the essay.
- I can help students identify appropriate word choices.
- I will work with the student to determine what their next steps will be and review any updates submitted in a timely manner before class.

Sample schedule for a student at the brainstorming stage:

Day 1: Introduction and self-reflection
- We will discuss different ways to approach college essay writing and what admissions counselors are looking for. The student will engage in a self-reflection activity that helps them to identify major life themes, interests, and connections. We will identify at least three potential essay topics. Homework: Student will choose three essay topics and write at least 5 bullet points for each topic.

Day 2: First draft
- The student will determine which essay topic has the most potential to showcase them in a positive and unique way. We will discuss strategies for writing an effective college essay. Homework: Write and submit at least 250 words of the first draft.

Day 3: Editing
- We will review progress on the first draft and consider ways to better highlight their personal qualities, values, and growth in their essay. Homework: Complete first draft, incorporating feedback received in class.

Day 4: Elevating and polishing
- In our final session, I will challenge the student to view their essay through the eyes of an admissions counselor. What does their essay convey about them as an individual, a student, and as a potential member of the college community? Have they showcased their writing skills and personal qualities in the best possible light? I will provide feedback and suggestions on their completed draft. Homework: Revise and polish draft by incorporating feedback received in class.
